A hazy golden beer with a white head. Aroma of white pepper and belgian yeast. Taste of white pepper, sharp, quite spicy.

Prominent dry pepper but perfectly balanced with that classic Thiriez backbone. Three kinds of ground pepper, lending a much drier spice than typical oily chili adjunct. Quite nice but should be shared. Rich.

On tap at Kerelshof Cassel. Hazy golden brown colour lasting white head. Aroma of biere de garde and pepper. I mean it's got some pepper. it's funny. it's light pepper but persistent. a mix of white and black pepper. flavoursome yet with a hint if pepper heat sur le finish. I liked it. bit of sweetness. odd but better for being on tap

330ml bottle from the brewery in Esquelbecq. Pours misty golden yellow, large frothy head. Good yeasty nose, fresh, vibrant, vanilla hints. Excellent saison character, typically Thiriez, fresh vibrant yeasty character. Pepper not exactly jumping out, and if it wasn't for the name I wouldn't search or find it, but there is some very distant peppery spice I suppose. Can't say it's particularly welcome unless paired with appropriate food. Great stuff all the same.

On tap at Sovereign, pours a mostly clear gold, white head. Nose has big esters, fusel, banana, big green peppercorn, floral too. Flavor has honey and candy, esters are still there, paint but also big green peppercorn. Finishes full bodied with some heat.

Many thanks for this beer to Jacek Wigier (wineofdreams@gmail.com).

Bottle from Dranken De Moor in Haasdonk near Beveren - quite the unusual find in your local old school bottle shop in rural Flanders... Black pepper beer from one of France’s more interesting craft brewers. Irregularly but tightly ’membranous’ lacing, egg-white, medium sized head, leaving behind a firm moussy ring and some ’dots’ in the middle, over an initially clear, peach blonde beer with warm orange hue, showing some translucent yeast bits here and there; turns into an equally cloudy orangey peach - still looking nice - with sediment. Interesting aroma of freshly ground black pepper indeed and a lot of it, soaked green peppercorns and moist white pepper even, ginger powder, tamarillo, barbecue spices, paprika, chicken soup in powder form, dried apricot, shag, ’witloof’, dried grapefruit peel, old ’jenever’, camomile tea. Fruity onset, hints of pear, pineapple and peach, sweetish with sourish edges, medium carbonation, minerally aspects somewhere, smooth and slick mouthfeel. Cereally and vaguely toasty malt body, bread crust and toasted bread aspects, dryish, ending in an unsurprisingly spicy finish, combining peppery and leafy, drying and quenching yet altogether still fairly gentle hop bitterness with actual pepper, coating the back of the mouth with an expressive peppercorn flavour without actually burning too much - clearly the intention here was to convey high quality pepper aroma and flavour rather than having a gimmicky spice beer as such, though an ’afterheat’ is certainly there and very clearly so. Some warming, ’jenever’-ish alcohol ensues after this but in this case accentuates the flavour of the peppercorns well. Interesting spice beer the Belgian way, different concept from the familiar stouts with dried chilis in it - which have nothing to do with actual pepper anyway, botanically speaking. I should give this a try in combination with a ’steak au poivre’ with fries...

Sampled at VCBF 2017. Thnx for sharing Eugene and Tim ! Pours clear blonde. Smell is intense spice. Taste is full, bit sweet, grainy. Bit pepper. OK. Weak body to sustain the spice level.

Thank you kraddel & tderoeck! Sampled draft @ VCBF 2017. Orange, little white head. Nose is massive pepper all right, bit oily, low zest. Clean beer, crisp, low oily, low zest, dry, grass & hay with massive pepper all the way. Very oily with massive pepper body. Funny beer but the pepper is massive & lovely, very fun.
