Inspired by the epic skyline of Chicago, Goose Island’s brewers set out to craft Big John; a tall, bold slugger of a stout that stands out vividly against the little soft beers out there. Epic amounts of roasted malt and an addition of cacao nibs give Big John a massive chocolate flavor and aroma. With a body as substantial and black as the building to which it pays homage, Big John is sure to inspire a sense of awe with every sip.

Draft at ChurchKey poured into a tasting snifter. Pours black with around a half finger of tan head. Some brown hues around the edges of the glass. Aromas of dark fruit, caramel, dark chocolate, roast. Tasting notes of dark fruit including raisins, caramel, toffee, dark chocolate, roast, molasses. A bit of booze but fairly smooth. Full body with a dry finish. Oily syrupy mouthfeel with light carbonation. Very nice.

Bottle thanks to summer santa 2013. Thank you jsquire! Pours viscous reddish black with a small frothy dark mocha head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with roasted malts, dark chocolate, banana bread, vanilla ice cream, alcohol, salty liquorice candy, raisins, oatmeal cookies, caramel, soil and sweetened dark roast coffee. Taste is sweet, bitter, malty and slightly estery with roasted malts, ripe banana, dark chocolate, vanilla ice cream (essentially banana split), dark roast coffee, toffee, caramel, oatmeal cookies, sweet liquorice candy, vanilla fudge, alcohol and hay. Mouthfeel is round, soft, silky, tiny bitter astringent and full bodied. Finish is slightly sweet, slightly bitter and malty with roasted malts, bitter chocolate, banana bread, vanilla fudge, hay, alcohol, toffee, moist soil, raisin brans and oatmeal cookies. Must confess I expected less but this is a very tasty and nicely estery imperial stout and the mouthfeel is BCBS good. --- Beer merged from original tick of Big John Imperial Stout on 11 Feb 2014 at 21:01 - Score: 8

Drought. Dark brown with reddish tint, small foamy beige head, sweet caramel like taste with strong mocha and sour cherry aroma, long bitter finish. The sweet and bitter tastes seem to coexist without mingling well. Could be better.

Bottle @ Scooper Tasting in Ulfborg. Pours cloudy nearly black with small tan head. Clear aroma of coffe, malt, and chocolate. Sweet flavour of malt and dark chocolate, with notes of cofee and clear touches of alcohol. Good, distinct finish of oak barrel aged beer. Very nice.
