Bottiglia.

Small if stable off-white head over still, golden-amber beer. American fruity/citrussy hops a mile out, followed by wet caramel. Hint at human sweat. Citrussy, passion fruit, sweet caramel. Finish however, has some cardboard and an indifferent bitterness. Quite slick, even a bit sticky; medium bodied at best. Very low carbonation. Nice, if unspectacular. Txs to Stef!

13 March 2020. Pre-Lockdown (in hindsight) Tasting with Anke & Pieter. Pours hazy dark golden with an unstable, frothy, off-white head. Typical profile of ripe mango, pine needle, kitchen herbs, yeast, pink grapefruit & apple peel. Dry, bitter, piney hoppy finish, all the while supported by solid biscuity maltiness. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Generic APA, never bad of course.

APA hopped with Columbus, Chinook, Cascade and Galaxy, by this exemplary Swiss craft brewery; slightly over its best before date, but I'll take the risk. Gusher, but manageable when given enough time to calm down. Thick and very frothy, pale greyish white, thickly plaster-like lacing, uneven-bubbled, irregular head on a deep, warm orange blonde beer with golden edges, misty with lively visible sparkling. Aroma of dried orange peel, dry hay, peanuts, sweetclover, unripe apricot, persimmon, hints of fried bell pepper, toasted carrots, soap, linseed, dried pumpkin flesh, bread crust and some onsetting 'rusty' and cardboard-like oxidation, but not too strongly so. Crisp, restrainedly sweetish onset, apricot and dried apple peel with light citric notes, lively carbonated but nowhere too harshly so, supple and slick, bit oily body. Smooth dry-peanutty, cracker-like and lightly toasted maltiness with minerally side effects, leading to a finely hopped finish, adding effects of dried grapefruit peel, orange zest and wet white pepper; toasted maltiness lingers along with the spicy, but gentle bitterness provided by the hops. Easy, straightforward APA, a good introduction to the style, so to speak; needless to say, the hops have lost much of their fragrance by now, but still act out elegant citrus peel-like effects keeping the whole beer refreshing and enjoyable. Some very early signs of oxidation are noticeable but did not disturb me anywhere. Very quenching on a warm spring day as well, too bad I didn't get this one in younger condition, but based on experience it is not difficult to reconstruct its younger self as being an easygoing, elegant example of this kind of 'surpassed' style - a style I can still greatly enjoy if done right, if only for its 'old-schoolness' alone.
