1554 Black Lager beer uses a lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be.

A surprisingly bright taste and a dry, chocolaty finish -- one evocative of dark brews enjoyed in Belgian taverns 500 years ago. Not a porter, not a stout -- it's 1554.

Enlightened Dark Ale
1554 defies the style guidelines of modern beer. Although dark in color, 1554 is not a porter, stout, schwarzbier or bock. Rather, it is a rebirth of a lost beer style called zwert (Flemish for black), which uses gruit for bittering. The oldest reference to zwert beer comes from 1285. However, our brewing inspiration came from a book published in 1554, which was the height of popularity for zwertbeer. First released in 1998, our whimsical improvisation includes a variety of specialty dark malts, a dash of licorice root, and a European lager yeast that’s fermented at ale temperatures.

Draft at the Burg Bar & Grill, downtown St Pete. Mid-brown and a little translucent with a film of beige head. Chocolate malt in the aroma with lightvgrassy and herbal notes. Nuanced taste of sweet treacle, some chocolate bitters, cola. Bitterness on the medium to long finish. Light body, with heavy, tight carbonation. Hard tenpin down, and that's what's fun.

355 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 6%. Very dark ruby to mahogany colour, nearly black. Small and shortlived beige head. Weak and uninteresting aroma, a little malts, a hint of chocolate and dust. The dry flavour is not very exciting either, but fairly refreshing. Moderate malts, a hint of chocolate again, also a hint of prunes and liquorice, very mild spices.

Bottle. God locking, clear, deep amber body under a small, lacing, beige head. Aroma has dark malt, bread, and coffee. Taste is medium sweet dark, gentle roasted malt, coffee, bread and hint of dark chocolate. Balanced in taste and body, pleasant aftertaste. A really balanced, smooth and elegant one indeed.

Bottle. A clear, dark brown beer with a small beige head. Some curtains. The aroma has a good dash of dark dried fruits, with roasted malts, notes of coffee and dark chocolate, with some caramel notes. It's full-bodied and softly carbonated, semi-dry, with flavors of dark chocolate, some coffee and a touch of dark dried fruits. Lasting finish. Quite pleasant this one. Easy drinkable and tasteful. 211231
