The Emelisse Sour Dark Ale Port Barrel Fermented is the first Sour created by Emelisse. This Sour has fermented in Port Barrels for over 1,5 years. This process has transformed this Sour into a real gem. The delicious fruity tones of cherry and red berries create the sweet and sour taste, with a slight hand of chocolate in the aftertaste. Wonderfully dry and thirst quenching.

15 June 2024. Bottle from the brewery; shared with Tim & Anke; many thanks to the former for hosting!

Hazy dark brown, small, frothy, beige head. Aroma of malt vinegar, red grape, brambleberry, ruby port, blackcurrant, wood, vague almond. Taste has sweetish-sour blackcurrant & grape in a malt body of almond, jam and malt vinegar. Tart finish of berries, dry wood, warming oxidised port alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. This has aged nicely.

Bottle split at the optimal climatic conditions tasting, Hazlemere, thanks to Kenny 11/08/21. Mahogany brown with a decent beige cap. Nose is nutty, dried fruit esters, spice, tarte fruit rinds, light funk. Taste comprises dried fruits, damp straw, stale bread, apple skins, light funk, grains, damp wood. Medium plus bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Passable ... firmly stuck in 3rd gear ... lacking a sour edge and any discerning barrel notes.

Bottle shared in HW / cheers to Kenny. Pours lightly unclear brown with a frothy off-white head. Lightly sweet, tangy dark malts, aged berries, mild funk. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Some old wood in the finish, dried fruits, berries, mellow acidity. Novel.

Tasting at Chez Cloin. Thanks to me. Hazy amber brown beer, small pale tan head. Airy palate, semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Modest earthy brown ale style malts. Fruity oud bruin tang, pretty blissed out. Port barrel? Pretty fucken light. Dry finish. Okay.

0.33 l bottle from 'Drinks & Gifts', best before February 2023, cellared for over a year. Clear, very dark ruby with a large, dense, stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, minimally roasty, slightly sourish, quite vinous-fruity aroma of caramel, chocolate, port, dark red fruits and vanilla. Gently sweet, quite sour, moderately roasty, gently vinous-fruity taste of caramel, dark chocolate, red berries, port, oak and some balsamic vinegar, followed by a medium long, quite tart, moderately dry, fairly woody, moderately roasty and slightly boozy finish. Medium body, gently astringent and quite effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Quite complex and intense, unfortunately slightly unbalanced due to an unpleasant acidity that lingers quite a bit. Has lots of potential, just needs some tweaking.

Hits all the style points well. Dark fruits, figs, cherry, mild woody flavour. Not as clean and bright as Rodenbach, just a bit more muddy. But a good beer, the abv is not so apparent in the feel. Hopcult dresden

Bottle. Red-ish dark pour, quite carbonated. Aroma of vineus cherry, tart, oak, vanilla and red grape. Taste has spritzy red fruit, dry tart cherry, oak, caramelised malt and a little cardboard. The idea is there and the flavors could work, but it seems the beer got a little oxidised during barrel aging and the body is too thin.
