Black Butte Porter Aged in Whiskey Barrels
We imagined a beer somewhere between la-la land and paradise where brushes of vanilla & oak combine in a rich and bold porter. Today is the day to summit.

Bottle, 2021 vintage. Roasted malt aroma with notes of vanilla, chocolate, licorice, molasses, whiskey and oak. Pours deep brown with a thin mocha brown head that has little retention and little lacing. Starts with rich roasted malt, chocolate, licorice and oak flavors as well as having a rich, full body and silky smooth mouthfeel. Finishes quite smooth with molasses, whiskey and vanilla flavors. Really nice barrel aged black butte that held up well in the cellar.

330ml bottle at the Beer Bank Kuala Lumpur. Poured almost black in colour with a short-lived, frothy light tan head. The aroma is roasty malt, creamy oaky caramel. The flavour is moderate sweet, light liqourice bitter, with a smooth, rich, dry, oaky, warm boozy alcohol bitter palate. Over medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle. Black with around an inch of light tan head. Weak aroma of chicory, caramel, light roast, whiskey. Pleasantly creamy texture. More robust taste but still a little smudged - caramel, light roast, vanilla, whiskey, oak, nagging bitterness. Frustratingly muffled.

Curious that Deschutes will put this up against their Black Butte imperial porters. Of which I have had several and can say this about them. Outstanding. My 12 oz bottle of Whiskey Butte came from the downtown craft beer store. And my New Belgium globe glass is receiving this brew, just because. The pour is mahogany brown with with a dark tan top that withers slowly. I lift the glass for a smell, candy, chocolate and bread, nice. A drink gives milk chocolate, wheat bread, a bit of booziness and herbs. Thin in the sensation, not unexpected. Okay for the style, best I can say.

Bottle/Fest. A- Roasty, cocoa. A- Dark mahogany color, dark liquid, brown head. T- Cola, cocoa, roasty, earthy. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- For a butte brew, it was a bit thin and weak and lacked a lot of flavor. No whisky really and a fair amount of charred cocoa flavor. Okay.

On tap at Deschutes - Portland, pours a deep dark brown / black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out whiskey barrels, toasted malt, and booze. Flavour is full of whiskey barrels upfront and followed by toasted malt. Manages to be robust but also fairly light on the palate. Really great.

Packaged September 13th 2021.
Pours a dark brown with a small head of tan foam.
Smells of burnt chocolate, roasted malt, hint of toffee, noticeable bitter notes, light whiskey.
Taste is dark chocolate, roasted malt, a kind of sweet fruity thing, some whiskey, slight warming from the alcohol.
Medium bodied.
Pretty nice beer.
