Blue Monk Special Reserve is a quadruple which has been aged for 3 years in red wine barrels from Château Haut Breton Larigaudière in Margaux! It is dark brown in color with a beige frothy head. It has an aroma and bouquet of a complex red wine, with a soft taste of spice, berries and black cherries. The flavour is enriched with touches of caramel, fine chocolate, toasted nuts and soft hints of smoke. The fruity elements of red and dark fruits comes from the aging in barrels fine from Château Haut Breton Larigaudière in Margaux. These flavors are adding a slight vanilla note and some refined wood tannins.

330ml bottle @ HBF 2016. Pours dark brown with a tiny head. Aroma of malts, syrup and toffee. Taste is boozy, malty and syrupy with some ripe fruits, plum and yeastiness. Finish is malty, caramely and syrupy with some ripe fruits and plum. A bit unbalanced and boozy.

--- Beer merged from original tick of Blue Monk Special Reserve (Bottled) on 23 May 2018 at 13:47 - Score: 7

33cl bottle. Pours a very dark brown, with a medium height tan head that gives way to a thin, velvety tan head. Smells of roasted malts, smoked malts, dark chocolate, dark and dried fruit, whiskey, caramel, molasses. The taste follows the same notes, with emphasis on the dried fruit, chocolate and caramel, as is the case with most quads. Smooth texture, medium to full body and a sticky-sweet and slightly smoky aftertaste. --- Beer merged from original tick of Blue Monk Special Reserve (Bottled) on 02 Aug 2017 at 17:19 - Score: 7. Original review text: 2013 vintage, not in any way better than when it was fresh.

Bottle from De Hopduvel. Dark brown colour, beige foam, stays long. Aroma of caramel and dark fruit. Some banana. Bitter hoppy finish. Good and drinkable but I expected more.

Almost opaque amber - brown beer that has a slight purple tint. Decent pale tan head. Palate is airy, semi dry and has reasonable fine carbonation. Typical Struise spicy esters and yeast over sweetish malts. A nice red wine kicks in and brings berry fruits before a spicy estery finish. Nice beer, tasty, wish the spicy ester character could be dialled back though. Maybe one to age.
