MASSIVE! Barleywine is released every year. What makes this beer so distinctive, and gives it the great depth of flavor, is the 8 hour long boil technique. The kettle at Gigantic is heated by a burner, essentially a blow torch under the kettle. This high heat caramelizes the wort, and the long boil intensifies that caramelization. The recipe changes every year, using different malts and hops, but the technique remains the same.

22 ounce bottle. 2016 vintage. Translucent mahogany brown color. Small creamy beige head. Rich caramel malt nose. Notes of figs, Demerara sugar, brandy, plum and more. Rich, bittersweet malt flavor. Dried fruit, plums, burnt sugar, vanilla and herbal hops. Complex and flavorful, with a warming alcohol finish. Smooth and delicious.

03.05.2015, tap @ Mikkeller Bar:
Tiny shortlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet grainy, sugar, wet grass, grain, sap, bark, harsh hops, worth, leafs, weeds caramel. Taste is slightly sweet and harsh, sugar, sap, wet grass, bark, caramel malts, harsh hops, weeds, worth, even more sugar. Medium bitterness, harsh mouthfeel. Not my cup of tea.

Bottle shared by ippopotamo36 (thank you Alberto!). Ambrata carica con riflessi rossicci, schiuma media persistente. Al naso sentori di caramello, frutta rossa sotto spirito, zucchero filato. In bocca è dolce all’attacco ma discretamente bilanciata, lunga e persistente, alcol. Corpo pieno, carbonazione media. Ottima.

This brew ("Beer #40") pours a clear dark ruby-amber color with a medium thick off-white head that diminishes gradually to a film. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt, caramel, fruit and hops. Full-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, ripe fruit and earthy hops. The finish is slightly syrupy with a malt and piney hops aftertaste. Pretty good beer all around.

Poured into a snifter, the color was a ruddy dark amber color with no head, but does have some alcohol strings along the sides.
The aroma blends some figs and red delicious apple to smooth over some tobacco leaf earthiness, clean with some subtle vanilla. Subtle earthy spice. Toffee and caramel malts.
The flavor yields to a malty smooth toffee to caramel malt sweetness, somewhat sticky. Tobacco leaf hops and earthiness blend into the figs and red delicious apple, once again. Quick malty smooth aftertaste leading into the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a great sipping smooth body. Mild carbonation.
Overall, really nice barleywine, but if this is supposed to an American styled one, the hops seem to be a bit more faded than expected. I dig for me, but I didn’t see any dates anywhere.

Tasting in Rome-Italy with daniele and Mortlach, bottle from Johnny Off License. Reddish caramel clear bright, little lacing. Nose: caramel American barley wine notes, classic. Pastry, some almonds, marzapane. Mouth: sweet really, caramel, contemplation character but very rich in aroma. Christmas beer in front of a fire place. Yes!
