Imperial Stout Aged in Cognac Barrels
A fantastic intersection of oak, spirit character, and decadent stout — and a special release for our 10th Anniversary!
Returning for the first time since 2020, and the seventh time ever, BOYD is our Imperial Stout aged extensively in cognac barrels. It's feisty and warming, with low bitterness, appropriately mild carbonation, notes of anise, brown sugar, figs, and subtle maraschino cherry.

Bottle from Valley Beverage, Sherman Oaks. Opaque, dark brown, light viscosity, ephemeral cap of head fading to a ring, no lacing. Aroma is earthy malt, anise, berries, hint of baked cookies/vanilla. Taste is strong berries, earthy malt, biscuit, late vanilla. Smooth, thin texture, soft carbonation, finish as taste. Am super pleased that this has held up over 8 years. Is there something to be said for beers that are brewed with traditional ingredients and a barrel vs. tons of adjuncts that may well fade?

22 oz bottle shared by tfontana. Thank you! Vintage 2018. Aroma is smoky, char, sweet cognac. Flavor follows. Some sweet cognac throughout the sip with char, chocolate, and oak. Shows very weak blackberries. A decent array of flavors. No booze. Held up well!

A deep dark stout with a very thin brown head. In aroma, sweet fruity chocolate malt with dark fruits, alcohol warmth, light nutella, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity chocolate malt with dark fruits, nutella, licorice, woody notes, alcohol warmth, very nice and rich. On tap at L'autre oeil.

Dark brown. No head. Pours fairly rich, the aroma has cognac. There's a nice little umami character, blackstrap, oh that's nice cognac character. Good body. That cognac fruitiness, that's really nice. Dark sugars...it's mostly just those two elements. But they are really good.

Poured from 650mL bottle. Black with minimal tan head. Burnt molasses, soft cognac in the background, hint of roast malt. Comes together nicely. I see, now, why I enjoy the double barrel versions as much as I do (first time trying the base).

Cognac and bitter coffee on nose with dark berries. Dark tan head. Well blended subtle cognac with expresso coffee the dominant taste element. Smooth and slightly oily.

500ml bottle.
Possibly the thickest beer ive ever poured. Jet, black hole, black. Medium brown head. As the beer sits the head turns chocolate brown, wow.
Deep aroma of soy, charred malts, bitter cocoa, molasses, and touches of wood and alcohol. The mouth feel is very viscous, with a super soft carbonation. The finish is quite sweet, with a light to medium bitter end. More charred malts nd soy come through. The barrel is hard to find. I think its emparting a woody sweetness, but its slight at best. Still an impressive impy.
