Imperial Stout Aged in Cognac Barrels
A fantastic intersection of oak, spirit character, and decadent stout — and a special release for our 10th Anniversary!
Returning for the first time since 2020, and the seventh time ever, BOYD is our Imperial Stout aged extensively in cognac barrels. It's feisty and warming, with low bitterness, appropriately mild carbonation, notes of anise, brown sugar, figs, and subtle maraschino cherry.

RBWG14 Trip Rating #41. Bottle shared at the Friday Night Downtown Inn Bottle Share. Pours a dark brown color with a thin foamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of big roasted malts, leather, tobacco, herbal hops. The taste is roasted malts, bitter coffee, tobacco, leather, bitter hops. Medium bodied, chewy texture. Nice beer.

(Draught at the brewpub, Oct 31 2013) Pours pitch black with a small bubbly pale brown head. Aroma fruity cognac, woody, boozy with roast and chocolate malts. Palate initially contains tons of cognac and that doesn’t really dissipate. Underneath that is sweetish chocolate and a bit of wood at first. Mid-palate the wood comes a bit more to the fore but cognac and malts predominate. In the finish alcohol is quite noticeable along with normal Hellwoods bittering hops, dry and slightly roasted. Mouthfeel full, not too syrupy, very soft carb, lots of alcohol heat. Barrel owns this one, but it’s a lovely barrel. One feels as though one is drinking a good brandy hybridized with a good RIS. Lush.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a medium size dirty brown color head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of dry bitter roasted malt with some black chocolate notes with very subtle Cognac notes. Taste is also dominated by dry bitter roasted malt notes with sweet undertones and black chocolates notes with light warming Cognac notes. Body is full with oily-like texture with good carbonation. Enjoyable though Cognac doesn’t really come out as much as I had anticipated.

Bottle - Vanilla, bourbon, chocolate and roasted malts. Jet black with a rich brown head. Sweet oak, liquorice, vanilla, toasted malts and lots of goodness. There is a small bite which I think will mellow nicely with some age, but this is a great beer to drink now. Not in large qty but a snifter would do you well. 2014 version, too boozy with chocolate and sweet candy notes. Like the orginal.

This is well balanced and superbly brewed. Definitely superior to Hellwoods. Aromas of smokey malt, anise, dark chocolate and a little hops. Cognac presence subtle but good. A little detectable booze as well. Finish is bittersweet barrel with booze and caramel. Consistency on the syrupy side. On tap at brewpub.

A deep dark viscous stout with a thin dark brown head. In aroma, an intense dark chocolate with molasses, licorice, wood extracts, espresso coffee and wine notes. In mouth, a sweet milk chocolate, bourbon, licorice, coffee extract, vanilla and loads of alcohol warmth. Superb interpretation.
