Preserved Lemons + Salt = Refreshing Gose

We have been preserving lemons in salt and lemon juice throughout the winter, ready to brew this refreshing, zesty summer special.

Gose, is a traditional German-style sour wheat beer, usually brewed with coriander and salt. Once nearly extinct, this very refreshing style is making a comeback and we thought it would provide the perfect backbone to this wonderfully complex summer beer.

A fabulous citrus accompaniement to fish dishes, or it could act as a sour lemon pickle to Moroccan food.

Bottle from lowcostbeer.com, consumed in date by a few days. Pours a cloudy light gold, brief fizz, some floating lemon sediment. Aroma of sour lemons, lemon drops. Taste of wheat, tart fruity lemons and not overly sour, salty finish, semi-drying. Light bodied, extremely refreshing. Very good.

27 February 2023. At Huzaar, Ghent. Cheers to the quiz crew!

A: clear golden, thin, white head.
A: lemon, lime, mandarin, Napoléon candy.
T: sour lemon, unripe mandarin, Napoléon candy.
F: tart finish, mostly lemon juice, vague salt.
P: medium body, slick texture, average carbonation.
Lacks the depth I'd expect from a Gose, okay.

A very tasty 3.6% sour, lots of flavour from the lemons. Light saltiness, drinkable, an excellent gose, superb when it's hot.

330ml bottle – Pours a hazy pale-yellow colour with a small thin while head that quickly disappeared. Aroma is predominately lemon but with some straw and yeasty notes once it rests a bit. A moderately sweet and light sour taste, lemon flavours with a tart drying light saltiness in the finish. Its okay, easy to drink but no more.

Pours a pale straw colour with a very small, frothy white head, and a hit of lemon juice on the nose, and that extends into the flavour, but we're talking lemon drops from the sweet shop now, coupled with a very decent tartness, almost puckering, but it carries the sweet lemon flavour along very nicely somehow, and into a smooth sour finish
