Top-fermented spring bock - the brewer explained to me that he does not even consider it a Bock himself because it is top-fermented, but I disagreed, in view of the many light Bocks in the Netherlands which are also top-fermented. Anyway, he continued to explain that this is intended as some kind of ’Viking’ beer brewed with rye, oats and garden angelica, also known as ’holy ghoast’, a particularly aromatic herb (and beautiful, majestic plant) I am quite fond of, as it reminds me of my grandmother’s herb garden. Clear ’old gold’ colour, snow white, thick and sticky head; floral aroma, hints of cloves, honey, aromatic herbs (but too subtle) and pear, but I did not manage to pull the angelica out of it with certainty. Soft fruity taste, sweetish, spicy but could have been more ’angelica-forwarded’ for me; I do get a deep, restrained rye sourishness as well as the lovely velvety mouthfeel established by the oats; remains soft and sweetish, with just a subtle hint of herbal hops in the finish, as expected from the style. This beer is clearly about subtlety, a quality which is easily forgotten nowadays among all those more extreme flavours. I, for one, can still appreciate subtlety, and this one achieves it very well. Good example of its particular style, but I did expect more garden angelica!
