The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Tap at Ravintola Kirjakauppa. Hazy orange color, small white head. Aroma is bready and grapefruity. Medium-bodied. Grapefruity and a bit grainy flavor. Maybe not the freshiest keg.

CAN 12 OZ courtesy of solidfunk. Almost clear amber, off-white head. Big grapefruit nose, lots of citrus peel, but no harsher pine or resins. Similar flavour - the sweetness is more like a ripe pink grapefruit than malts proper, clean pungent but not overly aggressive citrus peel bitterness. Some more sweet citrus fruitiness in the after taste. Very good.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 8/22/2016. Pours slightly hazy medium orange/amber color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, apricot, peach, pineapple, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, light caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of bright citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, apricot, peach, pineapple, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, light caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, apricot, peach, pineapple, mango, lemon/orange rind, pine, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and minimal lingering hop astringency after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, sticky/resinous, and lightly creamy/grainy balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Minimal warming alcohol for 7%. Overall this is an incredible IPA. All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink despite very resinous bitterness. A highly enjoyable offering.

Clear deep golden colour, good two finger frothy white to off-white head, good retention and lacing. Strong hop aroma, pale malts, grapefruit, apricot, pine, grass. Mild taste medium sweet and bitter, malty, fruity, hoppy, grassy. Lingering dry bitter aftertaste, spicy and fruity notes, medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Excellent elegant and well-balanced ipa.

tap - Pours gold with a small, lingering white head. It has a pleasant citrus hop aroma and a similarly citrusy, heavily hopped flavor. It’s medium bodied and has a long, crisply bitter finish.
