Barrel Aged Double Flanders Red Ale [Sour Ale].
Translation: Three Black Peters Black Blood. This is a reference to the blending team of Ron Gansberg and Curtis Bain, brewers at Cascade brewing and Preston Weesner, beer steward for the fest. The Three Black Peters take their name from Netherlands folklore. "Black Pete" was St. Nicholas’ helper and would scold the children who had been naughty and give a present to the ones that had been nice. Made exclusively for the festival, "Sang Noir" is a NW take on a traditional Flanders-style Sour Red Ale. Bigger than a traditional Red this Double Red is a blend of several barrel aged beers. Portions of the beer were aged in Pinot Noir and Whiskey barrels. Fresh Bing Blood Cherries were added to a portion and refermented in the barrel for three months before being added to the blend, giving it a big full bodied tart cherry red flavor with distinct barrel notes. This is a once in a lifetime beer from one of the most innovative breweries in the Northwest.

Bottle shared at RBScSG in Gothenburg. Pours ugly murky yellowish dark brown with a small creamy beige head that leaves some spotty trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sour and malty with dark bread, sourdough crackers, lemon juice, hay, moist soil, vanilla, moist wood, charries, balsamic vinegar and lemon zest. Taste is sweet, sour, malty and fruity. mouthfeel is round, tart, tiny dry, throat burning acetic and medium bodied. Finish is sweet and sour with dark bread, sourdough crackers, caramel, lemon juice, cherries, raspberries, dark grapes, hay, moist soil, moist wood, balsamic vinegar, barnyard and lemon zest. Too acetic and very hard to drink...

At Rich’s Massive Cellar Emptying Tasting. 2012 Sang Noir 9.8% a brown with a dash of red. A rich plum, figs & prunes aroma. Tart, cork, light fruitiness and a raspy dry carbonation. A bit oaky maple woodsy barrel charcter. Alright.

Bottle, 2011 project thanks to cocoapuph. Pours clear ruby hazel, small tan head, decent lacing. Initial aroma is quite acetic, mellowing somewhat to reveal cherries, roasted malts, lemon, oak tannins, nail polish remover, and sherry. Flavor is medium tart, tartness really comes on late, puckering after a bit. Somewhat roasty, cherry notes, vinous and oaky, some nail polish remover but less than in the nose. Medium body, lingering tartness. Not bad, not great either.

Bottle - Vintage 2011 - Lots of red grape and raisin with a touch of vinegar. Cloudy brown with a decent beige head. Acidic, tart red grape with a bit of balsamic. Not bad for the age.

[2/25/15] Draught at Cascade Brewing Barrel House in Portland. As Cascade Sang Noir. Dark brown with a beige head. Sourish aroma of spicy wood, dark fruits, a bit of vanilla, red wine, cobwebs and a musty cellary character. Sour flavor with a light sweetish note, with white, dark fruits, spicy wood and some vanilla, a bit puckering. Medium-bodied. Very nice.
