Barrel Aged Double Flanders Red Ale [Sour Ale].
Translation: Three Black Peters Black Blood. This is a reference to the blending team of Ron Gansberg and Curtis Bain, brewers at Cascade brewing and Preston Weesner, beer steward for the fest. The Three Black Peters take their name from Netherlands folklore. "Black Pete" was St. Nicholas’ helper and would scold the children who had been naughty and give a present to the ones that had been nice. Made exclusively for the festival, "Sang Noir" is a NW take on a traditional Flanders-style Sour Red Ale. Bigger than a traditional Red this Double Red is a blend of several barrel aged beers. Portions of the beer were aged in Pinot Noir and Whiskey barrels. Fresh Bing Blood Cherries were added to a portion and refermented in the barrel for three months before being added to the blend, giving it a big full bodied tart cherry red flavor with distinct barrel notes. This is a once in a lifetime beer from one of the most innovative breweries in the Northwest.

Bottle @ Danish Summer Gathering Ulfborg, 2012. Pours ruby amber with a small white head and lacings. Oak, funk , acetone, berries and leather. Quite rough and hot. Ends really dry. Unrefined.

Bottle @ Summer Gathering, Ulfborg. Nice head with good duration. Color is hazy brown. Aroma and taste are rich brett, fruits, malt, candy sugar, wood and vinegar. Nice and vinous.

Bottle, 75cl, at TFODRBSG-12. As Sang Noir. An unclear, brown beer topped by a small, dense, light beige head. Some vinegar on the nose, as well as dried fruits and some caramel hints. Lightly vinous. Vinegar, dried fruits, a touch of caramel and quite a lot of sourness in the flavor. Berries. Tart, full-bodied and soft on the palate. Lasting vinegar finish with dried fruits. Well, it might deserve a higher rating, but I think it lacks a bit on complexity. A nice beer though, that’s for sure. 120818

Draught at the Barrel House. Cherry nose, light vinegar. Great cherry flavor, vinegar and yogurt, light dust. Very much like a Rodenbach Grand Cru plus cherry. Nicely tart, full smooth body. Great depth. Great creamy cherry. Wow.

Pours ruby-tinged mahogany into a snifter. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to skim surface. Dark earthy sour pit fruit and meadow aromas. Tart sour cherry and earthy caramel front to back with a lasting puckering finish. Nice.

$21.99 bottle. Pours with a very deep bronze to brown hued body with red highlights. Fluffy tan head sits atop with good retention. Clarity is murky at best. Aromas are huge with sweet and succulent cherries, bourbon, fresh raw oak, pomegranate molasses, vanillin, floral, grapes, vinous, red wine, alcohol, very ripe plum, low acetone (ethyl acetate), low estery sweetness, lacto yogurt. Flavors are quite tart with a bit of residual sweetness, fennel and brown sugar with some marzipan as it warms. Pie cherries, ripe plums, ester. Cleanly sour, not nearly as acidic as La Folie (and not acetic at all). Cleanly sour, lactic and malic with huge vinous notes. Lots of vanilla, low whiskey, some red wine. Complex, but not really in a funky way. It feels a bit too clean. Strong lacto, light stomach acid. Some low vegital notes as it warms. Ester character gets a bit raw at times with plum and pear drops. Lively bubbles, pretty dry, medium to low bodied, tannic, puckering and warming. Quite tasty, but the price makes it really hard to repeat. I’d take Consecration at the price point.
