Our Biere de Chocolat celebrates the long and lauded history of chocolate production in San Francisco. Our aim was to create a beer bursting with cocoa flavors and aromas, balancing sweet and savory to create a complex but quaffable chocolate brew. To accomplish this we partnered with Dandelion Chocolate in San Francisco to create this rich brew brimming with chocolate character. Working with the unique flavors of Dandelion’s single-source beans, we created this decadent beer by layering in smoked and dark-roasted malts with citrusy Ivanhoe hops from Clearlake, CA. Finally, we added a blend of hand-roasted cocoa beans sourced from Madagascar and Río Caribe, Venezuela. The Madagascar beans add bright berry-cocoa flavors, while the Río Caribe adds dark chocolate and bourbon notes. A touch of vanilla rounds out the supporting flavors to create an eminently drinkable beer that is a chocolate lover’s beer through and through.

Formerly brewed at Hermitage.

Bottle. Beermoth, Manchester. Clear, very dark, reddy brown. Sticky film of tan head. Cocoa. Light coffee bean. Taste is cocoa dry. Thin, watery palate. Finishes dry, with a light bitterness. Sets off great this one. Lovely chocolate. But lacks any oomph, thereafter. Disappointing.

Wally’s, LA: Pours dark brown with creamy head. Aroma is vanilla and hazelnuts. Seriously, if you rate this beer and fail to mention the vanilla, you need to rerate this. Taste is sweet, with plenty of the above flavors, plus some chocolate and loads of sugar.

THANKS! More than half of a 355 ml. bottle. Bottle is gorgeous as with all Almanac beers. Dark brown, creamy mocha head. Sweet cocoa butter (or at least how I imagine cocoa butter tastes like), sweet sugar, chocolate syrup, exotic sugar,… Taste is pretty much liquid cocoa butter (same comment), exotic sugar, chocolate syrup, cacao beans, creamy mocha, light bitterness in the back, tastes more like actual cacao beans / etc. than extracts or artificial stuff. Body is a bit lighter than I would have preferred. Really reminds me of ST Choklat, bit lighter than I prefer for this kinds of beers to be but very lovely all the same.
