Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.
Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate.
This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.
Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

Bottle. Oxidized nose of caramel, raisins, booze, vanilla. Flavor is treacly caramel, booze, vanilla, bourbon, raisins. Bitter finish. Rather English in character. Good but a bit syrupy.

Bottle from Whole Foods... NY cons 2015-05-27 Duved Labeled 14,2% ABC - assuming 2014 vintage AR: loaded with caramel, figs, rasins, and dough AP: amber/rubt, thick stouty steady cream caramel colored lid F: heavy warming feeling, sugar on my teeth, figs rasins pruns and swedish sugar cake, bourbon vanilla, white oak, old butter, full body very long and lingering flavours, great brew! Extra bonus for the nice label ;)

Bottle. Pours clear burnt umber, medium beige head, dissipates fairly quickly, good lacing. Aroma is vanilla, dark sugars, oak. Flavor is sweet and fully bitter, oak, vanilla, apples(?), pine. Medium body. Quite a harsh bitterness coupled with a weird apple thing means that this one just isnt doing it for me.

Amber with a white head - Sweet malt, dark fruits and wood - Sweet malt body with more sweetness from wood and vanilla, and alcohol - sweet finish with vanilla and alcohol - This was nice, but to hot from alcohol

1000th Rating! Wanted to do something at least a little bit cool for this one time event, so I decided to grab a beer that I have tasted, and enjoyed the hell out of, and do a little compare and contrast. Visiting the brewery a few years ago, I give this brewery/beer a lot of the credit for getting me towards my love for craft beer. 2007 and 2014 bottles enjoyed side by side. The difference in color between the two years was quite surprising. 2014 edition: lighter amber color with short foam head. Brown sugar and graham cracker, sweet malt aroma. Flavor is much more of the same. Finishes on a boozy note with a ton of sweet caramel and brown sugar. 2007 edition: Much smoother. Vanilla. Brown sugar flavor and aroma. Not nearly the amount of booziness here. Nice, oaky cinnamon finish. Fun beer. Awesome barleywine. Hope these guys keep doing what they do.

Lots of barrel in this. Maroon pour with decent head and lacing. Light sweet finish. Very syrupy. Lots of caramel malt. Not the kind of barley wine I prefer. Bottle pour at Churchkey event.
