Indigenous to northern Europe, Baltic Porters historically stem from the shipping of British porters to the Russian hinterland. Unlike their British cousins, Baltic Porters are often brewed with lager yeast, which is the tradition we follow. Big & bold, with flavors of coffee, dark fruit & raisins, this black beer is smooth as a chocolate swirl.

Rating # 3,300. 22 ounce bottle. Brown black pour. Small dens creamy brown cap. Rich roasty malt nose hints at dark dried fruits and port wine. First sip brings notes of dried fruit, coffee, Worcestershire Sauce and burnt sugar. Complex and flavorful. Lots of body, though smooth and drinkable. Notes of dark chocolate and prunes in finish. Some warming alcohol as well. Delicious!

355 ml botlle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. Black colour, large tan head. Aroma of roast malts, coffee, prunes, raisins and chocolate. Soft mouthfeel. Medium sweet flavour, with the same elements as the aroma. Fairly low bitterness. Enjoyable.

bottle at JK O'Donnell's - Pours near black with a lingering tan head. It smells of dark roast malt, coffee, and chocolate. The flavor is intense roasted malt, coffee, smoke, chocolate, and hops bitterness. It's full bodied and has a great balance, leading to a long, roasted malt finish. Superb beer.

From May 2008

I got this bottle from nutbrown in a trade. Thanks Alan!

Cool looking label and I'm stoked to try another Baltic Porter. My experience to the style is very limited...

It pours a pitch black with a 2 finger head of tan foam. Good lacing and very good head retention.

Dark fruit dominates the nose for me but I also get notes of smoke and roasted malt.

The taste...Roasted malt is nicely done here followed by notes of coffee, caramel, and dark fruit. The flavours are really big but I'm surprised how smooth the overall drinking experience is. Mind you, the abv is right up there where it belongs for the style but I still find it quite drinkable as the alcohol shows itself as just some warming after the swallow. It's pretty close to being full bodies and the carbonation, I'd say, is about medium. The finish has a nice bitter coffee finish that lasts for quite a while. I like sipping on this one and it will probably take me a while to finish the bottle. Not a negative comment regarding its drinkability, more of a I don't want to see the end of the contents of the bottle. That's always a good thing. ;^) I think Smuttynose did one hell of a job here.

0.355 l bottle from 'BierPost.com', bottled in 2016. Pitch black with a thin, slightly creamy, stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty and a bit fruity aroma of milk chocolate, nougat, licorice, some vanilla and a touch of dark fruits. Rather sweet, malty, minimally roasty taste of nougat, cream, licorice, vanilla, hazelnut and traces of dark fruits, followed by a medium long, moderately roasty-bitter, slightly earthy and a little warming finish. Medium to full body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Very pleasant and well-made, easily drinkable despite the abv, good!
