Irish red ales? Yes, we know. Sweet, a bit cloying and, well, no thanks. So, it was brave of us (we say bravely) to put the words “red ale” after our own moniker. Why the hell would we do that? Because this is a real red ale, an ale to conjure with that happens to be reddish in colour. More importantly, it’s exuberantly, joyfully fruity with a bit of malty caramel.

500ml bottle as part of a delivery from Beautiful Beers and drunk at home. Reddish brown, murky, with the tiniest ring of white head. Malty aroma, some mossy earth, some light berry and a bit of metal. Taste is sweet with a herbal bitterness sitting on the tongue until the medicinal finish. Slight body, heavy carbonation. Not great, and so little to it. But worth a go.

Bottle @Birrifugio Trastevere (Rome). Bruna/rosso profondo, intensa, schiuma avorio media. Al naso note di malto, caramello ,frutta matura, leggero tostato, erbaceo. In bocca è dolce all'attacco, con bilanciamento amaro in chiusura perfetto. Corpo medio-leggero, carbonazione media. Non male.

Pours a nice, transparent, deep red to light brown, with a fluffy, quite dense, off-white/yellowish head. Good retention and very nice lacing. Not very potent aroma shows a well balanced mix of caramel sweetness, light toasted notes, delicate fruitiness. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter, with a slight bittering edge in a relatively dry finish. Taste notes as per aroma, plus a earthy feel in both taste and aftertaste. Certainly more bitter tha a classic irish red. Medium body, surely bigger than yuo would expect from the abv, with average carbonation. The nitro gives this a quite creamy mouthfeel, that possibly doesn't fit too well with a beer that has a bit of lively feel from the carbonation. Overall, this is distant from a classic irish red ale. I was not impressed, both in terms of flavour (not very deep or strong) and in terms of the idea behind this beer (nitro red? meh...). Still, a very decent drinker.

0.33 l bottle as 'Porterhouse Red Irish Ale' from 'Craft Bier Bude', best before January 2021. Clear, ruby with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, gently fruity-resiny aroma of caramel, raisins, marmelade, some pine and a touch of tea leaves. Gently sweet, malty, moderately bitter, rather fruity-resiny taste of caramel, raisins, tea leaves and some marmelade, followed by a short, gently bitter, quite herbal-resiny and a little grassy finish. Medium body, smooth and gently effervescent mouthfeel, soft to average carbonation. Nice Ale, not really classic a Irish Red but somewhere between English and American taste-wise.

Tap at Cervecería L'Artesana, Oviedo, Spain. Pours a beautiful deep amber, with fluffy and very fine whitish foam. Aroma is intensely earthy, underwood. Body is average, like carbonation. Taste is moderately sweet, with a little toasted bitterness. Final is average.
