Zwart bier zonder schuim. Smaak is licht zoet en licht bitter met iets van karamel en iets van fruit als bessen.

The "massieve ale" (or extra strong dubbel, if you like) in this series of Limburg regional beers from a young, small beer company dedicated to Duchenne's disease, for which they are trying to raise funds for scientific research. Steini bottle from De Vidts in Sint-Niklaas. Medium thick, very stable and closed, thickly 'membranous' lacing, pale greyish beige head over an initially almost clear, dark burgundy brown beer with ruby red glow and some dead protein bits near the bottom in the end. Aroma of treacle, chocolate milk even, toffee, candied dates, lots of fluffy powder sugar (as sprinkled on a doughnut or something), kahlua, banana, quite explicit cloves, very sweet industrial caramel sauce, honey, hints of wet dog, rainwater, stewed beef, liquorice candy, cooked pumpkin, apple sauce, brown rum, nougat, chewing gum, rubber. Expectedly sweet onset, ripe blue plums mixed with raisin, candied banana and very sweet ripe pear, fizzy carbo, a bit minerally and distracting from the actual flavour but not harshly numbing, light beef stock-like umami accent, underlying sourishness, very 'dim'; thick and somewhat syrupy, fluffy caramelly malt sweet middle with nutty edges but also a lot of residual 'brown' sugariness on top, spicy phenols quite prominent, very clove-like; a thin but noticeable bitterish toasted malt aspect comes in as well. Ends with a light chocolatey note on top of all that caramel, brown sugar and sweet fruitiness, but a deep, slightly spicy, mildly earthy and bit herbal hop bitter note comes in just where it becomes all too sweet - saving the day, or at least trying to do so, by countering this sweetness with a quite pronounced, yet inexpressive and 'dull' bitterishness - which is then taken over by a slightly wry, but first and foremost heart-warming, liqueur-like alcohol effect. Brown sugariness and a mostly sweet maltiness linger, the latter nevertheless adorned with a thin toasty-bitterish touch. Your average, overly sweet Belgian dubbel / quadrupel (this one hovering in between), a tad too sweet with quite a lot of lingering, bit sticky sugars, but at the same time adequately hopped as well, with a subtle umami aspect to it, probably coming from the (visible) proteins. I had much worse dubbels (and quads) than this, but I'm sure I will not remember it for its memorable greatness either after a few months.... But maybe that's just me sampling beers a bit too enthusiastically. By itself, perfectly acceptable for what it tries to be.

33cl Bottle from Prik&Tik Pauwels. Reddish dark brown colour, beige head. Aroma of dark malts, dark fruits, raisin, prune, brown sugar, alcohol. Flavour is medium sweet, light spicy, light floral, brown sugar, dark fruits, alcohol, light bitter finish with more alcohol. Medium-bodied, just a tiny bit over-carbonated. Nice enough.

Opaque dark brown colour with ruby red hue against the light, small frothy tan head, good retention and lacing. Aroma sweet malty, dark dried fruits (dates, raisins), chocolate, brown sugar, liquorice, hint of citrus. Taste moderate sweet, slightly bitter, chocolate. Full body, oily to creamy texture, soft carbonation. Finish sweetbitter, spicy hints, bit chocolate. Very nice,

Very dark brown colour. Aroma is very fruity and sweet. Dried red fruits and also some strawberry jam. Flavour has that fruity sweetness and a fairly deep malty flavour. Very good.

Bottle @ weekly tasting shared with Dutchdrebus and Martinus. Very dark brown to black color, medium sized light brown head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is a bit faint. Taste malts, some raisins, some fruit, some sweetness and maybe a distant hint of caramel. A bit fizzy carbonation, decent body. Meh.

33 cl. bottle @ Bahnhove in Hove. BBF 04/08/2015. Pours a blackis, extremely dark brown with a creamy tanned head. Nose is pretty sweet, milky chocolate with lots of sweet dried fruits like raisins & dotes, coffee with cream, sweet coffee grounds,… Taste is pretty unbalanced, bitter liquorish upfront with coffee, lots of sweet dried fruits, light herbs in the back, finish is pretty messy with cold coffee, thinner, almost watery in the back with some Malibu Rum type booze in the back, some bitter roots. Still despite these flaws, pretty enjoyable & way more interesting and fun than most run-of-the-mill BE beers which a great thing.
