This is the first in an ongoing, playful exploration of the interaction between our Farmstead® ales and different hop selections.

Anna (1902-1993) was our grandfather’s sister; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to her and her 13 siblings. In her honor, this Farmstead® ale was dry-hopped with Motueka™ hops grown by Freestyle Farms in Upper Moutere, New Zealand. Unfiltered and naturally carbonated, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Anna.

750 ml bottle. Thank you Clarkvv for grabbing this one! Aroma is lemon, soft floral, mild dusty basement. The flavor follows with a little more depth of minerals, straw and soft acid. Very soft tartness. Nicely dry texture with refreshing character. Nice!

Bottle shared by CLW--thanks, Chris! at "No two styles alike tasting." Clear, bright yellow with thin cap of head fading to ring, nice soapy lacing. Aroma is strong basement/laundry basket funk and fruit. Taste is strong citrus, stone fruit, sweet/tart fruit, basement. Smooth, frothy texture, soft carbonation, finish as taste. Well constructed, good strength of aroma and taste.

750ml from the brewery, opened to celebrate the birth of our baby boy. It pours crystals clear pale yellow with a fluffy, lasting white head. The aroma is bright, fresh, zingy, tangy, big lime character, juicy white grape, gooseberry, melon, soor plooms, sherbet lemons, fragrant, floral and elderflower. The taste is crispy, firmly dry, tart, tangy, bright, vinous, pithy, zesty, lemon & lime, pomelo, grapefruit, snap of citric acidity, sherbet, firmly dry, oak, dull barnyard vibes, hint of tannin, gooseberry, white grape, white wine, touch of straw, hay and grass with a firmly dry, oaky finale. Medium body and fine, spritzy carbonation. Classy and well executed. Effortlessly drinkable.

750 mL bottled Dec 2019 drunk 7/15/23. Clear honey-golden. Small, white head quickly to ring. Nose is lovely Motueka with lemon and sweat. Mixed culture adds lactic acidity and grain is crackery and rustic. As with Anna, I think it vastly improves with a few years but this is still interesting and malty. Maybe a touch acidic which would benefit from aging.

750ml shared with George's gang @ Green Point campground beach ⛱️ Appearance: cloudy blonde with a white head. Aroma: so much of Motueka hops straight in your face, sweet flowers, some creaminess. Taste: along the same lines, quite herbally, some ascorbic notes. Overall: quite good, but bot the best, probably Motueka is not really my thing.

Bottle. Pours cloudy pale yellow, large white head, great lacing. Aroma is citrus, dust, lemon, other things I can't read, but apparently nice. Flavor is light plus tart, light funk. Mineral. Light body, soft mouthfeel.

375 ml bottle from MBC, bottled March 19, 2019. Orange, hazy body, with a big, frothy, lacing, white head. Aroma of citrus, moderate pine, straw, dough, moderate funk, tropical fruits. Tastes similar, with more tropical fruits. Medium, slick mouthfeel, with a quite lively carbonation. Finishes smooth, clean, hoppy, very fruity, moderate yeasty, citric, with tropical fruits, some straw, subtle pine. Tasty! Perfectly balanced and so smooth and fresh to drink, while also pretty complex. Pretty hoppy compared to the regular Anna. Outstanding Saison I could drink all day. Score: 8 / 4 / 8 / 5 / 17
