Broadside was launched as a 6.3% bottled beer in 1972 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the battle of Sole Bay fought against the Dutch Republic in 1672 off the Southwold coast, just across the green from the brewery.

Ingredients: Pale, Black, and Chocolate malts; First Gold hops

Broadside is a dark ruby red beer rich in fruitcake aromas, almonds and conserved fruit. The fullness of the beer makes it a good accompaniment for hearty food.

Very classical and righteously well-known English ale with a pale beige, mousse-like, stable head and a cristal-clear, warm and appealing bronze colour. Malty nose with fruity, orangey and flowery notes, accents of honey, port wine and coffee; taste a nice soft and smooth maltiness well-balanced with sweetish fruity notes, drying towards the finish and ending in a somewhat peppery hop bitterness linked to a bitterish toasted maltiness. Very English, very enjoyable, well-balanced ale.

(Keg at William K Annankatu, 20140702) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had toffee, caramel and malts. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were caramel, sweetness, toffee, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet and bitter. A very, even too sweet English ale.

Bottle at Benzai. The Netherlands just beat Spain with 5-1. This might or might not influence this rating a little bit. Brown colour with a small to medium sized beige head. Smells malts, sweet, somewhat hoppy, some raisins, decent. Tastes sweet, malts, raisins, fresh, a bit watery. Thin body, soft but nice carbo.

Bottle @ home shared with Dutchdrebus. Nice deep dark red to brown color, average sized off-white to beige head that leaves good lacing. Not a lot of aroma. Taste malts, lightly caramel, a nice moderate bitterness. Medium body and carbonation. Quite like this one.

Flasche (50 cl). - Sehr dunkles Rotbraun, klar.

Caramel-coloured, slightly lively-looking beer with a thin head and malt/caramel aroma. Flavour is a caramel and malt blend too but with a nice, sharp hop hit as well. very drinkable.

All malt here, appetizing brown color, off white head that dissipates rather quickly. Aroma of cheerios, bready malts, some dark fruit. Taste is similar, very smooth and easy to drink. Nice finish.
