Rocky tan head left a foamy cover on a near black still body. Malt, cereal & demerara aroma. Medium bodied, sharp on the tongue with a clean back. Dark chocolate, malt, coffee & stone fruit tastes.

Oatmeal stout from this microbrewery in Cheshire, weirdly with the ingredients list in (among other languages) Dutch, apparently they sell a lot to the Low Countries... From a black, blue and purple can, bought at Beergium. Small-bubbled and quite dense, lightly membrane-lacing, yellowish beige, medium thick, gradually 'breaking' head, black robe with hazy chestnut brown edges. Aroma of cappuccino, coffee cream, mocha ice cream, melting black chocolate, toffee, toasted pecan nuts, cashew nuts, hints of dried dates, bayleaf, burnt toast, cinnamon powder, chocolate cookies, dry clay, spelt bread, raisins, minerals. Sweetish onset, very clean and straightforwardly blending in with the malts, light sourish edge of roasted barley, some vague date and blueberry hints echoing in the background, medium carbonation with restrained but refreshing minerally effects; soft, smooth, oily body, quite full for its ABV, deeply sweet pecan-nutty, dry-caramelly and black-chocolatey with a robust but welcoming, very coffeeish, mouth-filling bitterness to it, especially towards the finish, when a dash of spicy hops is added; clear spelt-like graininess and oat-like velvetiness as well. Long, roasty bittersweet finish, very nutty and coffeeish but clean and very well balanced, with a degree of self-restraint you don't often see in 'craft' stouts anymore these days. Some bayleaf- and very vaguely liquorish-like aspects accompany this bitter-chocolatey and coffeeish exit, while everything remains very smooth and balanced. Oatmeal stout the way Samuel Smith or other early modern and thoroughly British brewery would make it: no unnecessary embellishments or additional ingredients, just your lovely bittersweet, dense, straightforward but perfectly finetuned old school stout. The perfect introduction to traditional oatmeal stout, no technical flaws here but no redundancies either. Highly drinkable as well as enjoyable.
