Flying Scotsman is a sophisticated full flavoured premium bitter beer combining the best barley from the north and robust southern hops. Profoundly malty in aroma but balanced with hints of raisiny spiciness and toasty dryness. Fresh, slightly citrus tang with a rich rounded finish.

500 ml. bottle @ home. This is apparently the official Flying Scotsman (I had too look that one up) which sounds a bit funny to me because like how many unofficial beers can there beer for a famous train? This is also the first beer that I see that makes an effort to appeal to trainspotters (beer geeks have been speculated to have evolved from trainspotters in the UK). //// Pours a totally clear dark caramel amber with a small but firm off-white head. Nose is cloying with cheap dark honey and toasted raisin bread with butter (not diacetyl, just raisin bread with butter), this is too sticky. Tastes cloying of mild herbs, liquorish, metals, cheap honey, raisin bread, touch watery kvass, bready,… metallic, herbal kvass aftertaste. Fizzy, faintly watery. Acceptable beer but cloying is like one of the weirdest characteristics for a bitter to have, this is supposed to be a mild style that is lower alcohol and easy to drink in large quantities, something that is cloying and tastes like raisin bread with butter and honey.

Bottle on the 2nd Friday night is Bottled Beer Night 2014. Bottle from B&M Canterbury. Deepish clear amber colour with lasting off white head. Crappy toffee caramelly aroma. Not diacetyl. Just I don’t like this sweet toffee thing. Just sweet and not my thing at all. Give me a clean fully attenuated lager any day. Nope. Not for me.
