In the Surly brewhouse, brewing our anniversary beers means one thing: forget what ya know and try something different. In honor of five glorious years, we bring you a 100% Brettanomyces-fermented Dark Ale, aged in red wine barrels. Flavors of sour cherry, tobacco, oak, and classic “Brett” barnyard funk, balanced by Dark Munich malt chewiness. Enjoy immediately or age at cellar temperature for a couple years. Five has strong flavors of earthy black cherry and raisins with a sour finish.

0.75l bottle @ RBNAG11 bought at Cracked Kettle webshop. Pours a deep deep mahogany red body with a medium-sized sidesticking off-white head. The aroma is really nice. Tones of wood, wine, licorice, some smoke and a nice sourness. Average carbonation levels on top of a full-bodied oily mouthfeel. Dark and woody flavors, light sweet and sour, really vinious with a lovely light sour and heart burning aftertaste! Damn good stuff!

Shared bottle, RBNAG 2011. Dark brown colour. Sourish aroma and flavour, farmhouse notes, lemony and gueuze-like despite the darker colour.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of bnielsen13. Thanks Brad! Dark maroon brown appearance with a small brown head. Tart, bretty, dark cherry-raspberry-blackberry, mildly funky, fairly tame but nice aroma. Tangy, moderately sour, tart cherry-berry, moderately funky, red wine, almost juice-like, tasty flavor. Somewhat sour, berry, tangy, dry, mild vinous finish. Nice, easy drinking sour.

Winterfest ’11. Wine and brett aroma. Dry white wine flavor with mildly sour yeast, but there is fruit in there also. Herbal finish. Different from any other beer I have had from Surly.
