Belgian-Style Brown Ale Brewed with Yams, Molasses, Maple Syrup and Spices

Brewed with 17 lbs. of yams per barrel (in other words, a lot of yams!), this autumn seasonal is a different take on the “pumpkin” beer style. Brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup. Rather than ferment the beer with our traditional Belgian yeast strain, this version was 100% fermented with brettanomyces, adding a dry, earthy quality to the traditionally bold and spicy beer.

Bottle @ countbeer shared by me. Ruby colour with a small off-white head that doesn’t last at all. Smells molasses, herbs, autumn leaves, slightly cinnamon, sweet. Tastes very sweet, some maple syrup, molasses, herbs, a hint of chocolate even, bourbon, nuts. A herbal bomb, but somehow I like it. Medium body, soft carbo.

10% part of the 3000 yen tasting set at CBB. A great amber brown pour with a light beige head. Sweet, sour, fruity, tart with mild pumpkin beer spiciness. Full bodied, zesty, good caramel, sour/tart fruit vibes, some cocoa or nutty notes. Right up my alley. Comparative tasting reveals a kind of candy sweetness to it.

Belated birthday beer gift bag from the brother inlaw. Pours pretty orange brown with nice head. Nose is slight pumpkin spice. Tastes of sweet potatoes, nutmeg, caramel, earth, and touch medicinal. Alcohol present on finish and overall a touch thinner than expected.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 6/25/2013. Pours slightly hazy dark ruby red color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, molasses, pear, apple, raisin, dark bread, toast, yam, cinnamon, clove, allspice, maple syrup, pepper, nutmeg, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt, spice, and yeast ester notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, pear, raisin, apple, molasses, toast, cinnamon, yam, nutmeg, clove, allspice, brown bread, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Lingering notes of dark fruit, apple, molasses, cinnamon, toast, yam, nutmeg, clove, allspice, brown bread, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice balance and complexity of malt, spice, and yeast ester flavors; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a slick and fairly syrupy mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent spiced Belgian strong ale. All around great balance and complexity of malt, yam, spice flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle - Vintage 2012 - Yam, brown sugar, spices and syrup. Dark brown and orange with a thin brown head. Earthy yam and pumpkin, spices and a bit of alcohol. A nice pumpkin, maple like beer.

On tap at Shark Club in Howell, MI. Pours an amber brown with an off-white head. Interesting cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove aroma. The three spices return in the aroma, though the clove gets stronger and kind of gives it a Belgian yeast tone. Beyond the spices are hints of roasty malts, brown sugar, and then that sweet maple sugar definitely makes itself known, particularly in the finish. A really nice spice blend.

Sampled from bottle @ RBBSG II. Hazy red color, small off - white head. Aroma is very sweet. Taste sweetness and alcohol, I guess maple syrup or something too but I don’t really taste it that much. Medium to full body, medium carbonation.
