Originally developed for "Bean Queen" Zola Dore in a small batch kettle system by Yukoner Mitt Stehelin, we’ve retained the artisan qualities of this unique, unfiltered brew. Tasted in August 2011. Aroma is earthy, smoke and coffee. Not sticking out much. Color is black with not a lot of head. Taste: A lot of black coffee, espresso, with notes of smoke. Medium bitterness. Well achieved beer. Reminds me Guinness stout.

341. ml. bottle. Bought over from tderoeck. Split by 2. At least 6+ months of age but easily more. Pours black with basically no mocha head. Nose is roasted, clear roasted espresso and coffee in the nose, roasted malts but slightly covered / coupled with a simple sweetness with light molasses. Taste is bitter roast, roasted coffee and espresso leading into simple molasses and chocolate sweetness with some cocoa and cold coffee. Little carb. & not too heavy body. Certainly enjoyable but very simple and bit basic. I have had certainly better and this could have had something more but still nice.

Clear dark brown beer, creamy to aery beige brown head, unstable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: lots of coffee, some caramel, sour berries, cocoa powder, but mainly lots and lots of coffee. MF: soft carbon, medium to full body, creamy texture. Taste: cold coffee, cocoa powder, bit sour, bitter touch. Aftertaste: lots of dark chocolate, coffee, roasted flavours, pretty bitter. Too much coffee for my taste, but I guess most coffee stout lovers will go crazy for this one.

Draft - Bitter coffee and chocolate as expected. Opaque black with persistent brown thin head. Fairly light flavored on the coffee considering the description, and very light on the palate. A light bitterness throughout and a nice finish. After warming in the glass the coffee does breakthrough a bit more. Overall a very sessionable stout.

Bouteille 341ml. Couleur noire opaque, mousse moka disparaîssant rapidement en laissant un anneau autour du verre. Arôme, d’espresso, de chocolat noir et de réglisse. Goût de café noir, de chocolat noir, de malt torréfié, avec un petit quelque chose de fruité. Faible carbonation, avec de petites bulles fines piquant la langue. Par contre, la texture est un peu faible pour une stout, elle pourrait être plus riche.

Very dark brown beer. Mild malt and mild coffee on the nose. Light palate, fairly dry. Dark malt but very mild, almost apologetic. Very light coffee, barely there. Mild minerals. Wishy washy stout.

Strong coffee smell, pours pitch a brownish black, tracing pretty decent. The overall taste is fairly one dimensional in the coffee category with some roasted malt hinting in there somewhere. It’s a pretty good overall product, though I must say, just not a lot of overall depth. Bottle from the SAQ

Found this one at the Casino SAQ in Hull, Quebec. Pours a real dark brown colour with little red highlights. The head is small, but light brown and gives out decent creamy lacing. Molasses aromas with a touch of roasted grains, nuts and lots of dark fruits. The coffee show up in the taste, but very lightly. More roasted malt and hops, without being too bitter. Not sure if the coffee is not showing much because this could be an older bottle (looks like it is showing Feb. 2012 as best before date, but the notches are not precise). Still, drinkable.

341 mL bottle courtesy of Secret Santa JulienHuxley and shared at the 17th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering, 1/28/12. Hooray for finally getting this provincial rating! Pours a clear dark reddish brown color with a thin tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of big coffee notes, chocolate, roast and caramel. The taste is coffee, nutty notes, chocolate, mint and a leafy hop finish. Medium bodied. Nice beer.
