Watery foamy yellow pour from church key. A bit of hops and malts but pretty boring overall

Bottle from Lekkerbier, Sint Nicolaasga. Huge annoying gusher, took forever to pour. Aroma is grassy with green tea, lemongrass, soft hops, herbal and peppery notes, grainy malt. Flavour is moderate to medium bitter. Body is light and a bit too heavy on the carbonation. Not nearly as watery as I expected considering the abv. Overall pretty good, too heavily carbonated but a nice grassy hoppy lemongrass aroma.

Pale lager hopped with Simcoe – an India pale lager, in other words, but at only 3.5% ABV, an interesting idea and quite unique at the time when it first hit the market, especially for a small Walloon brewery that has been in existence since the late 20th century. Strong gusher, taking me a while to open with not too much loss – point off for that. The head formation is impressive, inches thick, difficult to pour even, turning all rocky and ‘flowery’ in the end, cream white and bath foam-like leaving intricate patterns of cobweb-like lacing: hazy deep straw blonde to ‘old gold’ robe with fierce, albeit ‘refined’ and very champagne-like sparkling sustaining the pillowy head. Aroma of sugared lemon flesh and homemade lemonade, lemon candy even, whipped cream, meringue pei, flour, green melon, ripe pear, bath foam and a touch of onsetting ‘rusty’ oxidation. Sweetish cereally onset, low fruity notes of pear and green banana, sourish edge, softly but very vividly prickling carb; soft fluffy malt breadiness in the middle, a tad grainy at its sides but still feeling fuller than expected for this ABV, evolving into long, pleasantly drying, grapefruity and even quinine-like, grassy hop bitterness which eventually becomes even a bit astringent in combination with the grainy aspect of the malt bill. Quite different and unique (certainly for Belgium), this is a rare example of a successful Belgian IPL, even if the bottle I got was a bit too old already; I can only imagine how refreshing this must have been when young. Quite a nice surprise, in all.

Bottle. First (careful!) pour is 99% foam, Mlíko-style. Hazy golden color on the bottom. Aroma is pale malts, grassy, floral, a bit peachy. Taste is flowery, sweet grains, a touch of earthy hopspice, a bit milky. Silky mouthfeel with creamy carbonation. Not amazing, but I guess it's pretty good for a lower alcohol Premium Lager. So overall decent.

Best aardig bier, smaak blijft verrassend lang hangen.

Bottle from Geers. Hazy golden colour, white foam. Citrussy, dry bit herbal. Easy drinkable, bit too much carbonation. Not bad.
