This is our atypical take on an English stout. But our stout is more accessible than its British counterpart because of the sweeter flavour and the less pronounced caramel taste.

Bottle (from Noel Cuvelier) at home - 20/10/12. Obscured copper brown (too light a shade for a stout in my opinion) with an off white head that soon clears. Nose is thin, comprises treacle toffee, lactose, brown sugar, dark fruit tones. Tastes of sweet toffee, sugar, more sugar - meh! Medium bodied veering towards watery, spritzy carbonation leading to a sweet finish. Sweet, shit - meh !

(bottle, 33cl) Dark brown colour with a beige and medium-sized foamy head. Sweet and skunky malty aroma with traces of molasses, beet sugar, vegetables and sulphur. Extremely sweet flavour, light to medium bodied with a flat carbonation. Sugary malt-character, slightly roasted with molasses and veggie notes; artificially sweet and sticky finish. Undrinkable in my opinion. 12.VI.12

Brown 33cl bottle, best before 08/2009, drank 02/2009. Poured into a Forbidden Fruit chalice. Many years ago I had a bottle of this in Liege (Belgium), it was out of date by a few years or two and tasted awful. I have always remembered disliking but couldn’t remember why. On a resent trip to Belgium I came across the beer again, so bought one to review. Looked great at first, deep, deep ruby red, almost black to the naked eye, but held to a light source the true colour becomes more apparent. The large tan coloured head fell away far to swiftly, but the beer still looked OK even as the head shrank. No hints on serving temp, I think it might have been too cold at first because I couldn’t smell a thing. Not even the sweetness that was about to smack into my mouth as I took the first sip of the sickliest beer I think I’ve ever had. Towards the end of my self imposed desire to finish off the monster the true sweetness aroma began to appear. A fairground toffe apple, candyfloss, bilious, nauseating smell filled the chalice and my nose. Incredible and intense sweetness in the taste, more like a malty sweet nasty than a beer. I had to get some oatmeal salted biscuits to help me finish the beer (I don’t chuck beer away, I perserve to the end). Carbonisation was a bit heavy, but as I couldn’t get past the sweetness does it matter? Avoid like the plague, unless of course you are into really sweet beers, which I am not.

33 cl. bottle @ De Groote Witte Arend: (A) dark brown/red with a hint of black & tanned head – (S) very sweet with lots of liquorish mixed with dark fruits and some caramel – (T) very sweet with heavy dominating liquorish, caramel malts, anis, Christmas spices, brown bread, brown sugar & dark malts, hint of milk chocolate – (B) average body with a very slight creamy feel to it, slightly below medium carbonation – feel a bit like everyone is unjustly slamming this because they approached this basically expecting an American style stout which is a bit odd idea despite this indeed being called a stout, this is a very Strong Belgian Ale – middling to not bad in its category – not bad for me personally

Bottle at home in London. Pours brown with a frothy, tan head. Some distinct male body odor in the aroma. It’s dead on B.O. with hints of dark malts. Flavor is unpleasantly sweet with straight sugar, sweat, dark sugar, mushy bread. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Sickly sweet finish, some earth, very faint roast, more sugar. Ech, this isn’t good at all.

Dark brown but clear beer. Light and crispish palate, moderate carbonation. Very sweet malt with licorice, a sprinkle of herb and a splash of coca cola. dry minerally finish. Ok. Perhaps a bit too saccharin.

33cl Bottle from Brugs Bier Festival. Clear dark reddish brown colour, beige head. Aroma of malts, dark fruits and caramel. Flavour is very sweet, sugar, caramel, malts, cola. No bitterness. Light to medium bodied. Way too sweet, stout name unworthy.

bottle, pours black with a nice tan head. Raosted malt nose with light hop hints. Ok it is a sweet stout and for that style it is right on. Sweet with little to no bitterness. You get a little bit of malt in the background, but a ton of sweet all the way around. The mouth is light to moderate in carbonation and finishes with a lingering sweet flavor. Not my style, but I won’t punish it for being what it is.
