Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens (ed: Weihenstephan denies this), “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness.

It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways.

“1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Not a huge fan of the style but this is probably the best I had. Poured yellow with moderate head. Nice and sour but not too much so. Good stuff.

Bottle. Not real familiar with this style, better than I thought it would be. Gold in color with a large, explosive head that slowly dissolved into a slightly irregular head. Aroma was slightly fruity with a lactic acid note. Taste was not as sour as you would imagine. Taste was almost a tart wine taste. Not bad.

My 500th rating! thanks dsnowden for the bottle!
Opaque golden/yellow color. Aroma is very fruity, peaches, and mango, and banana, and some wheat funk. Flavour is sour, and tart, not lambic sour, but still there is a sourness. And i’m getting the fruit again in the flavour, with a nice hefe finish. Wow. i really like this stuff, great summer beer. I wish i could get this on a regular basis!

Bright classic lactic sour. Easy drinking, almost spritz with apple like notes. Dry. Perfect with pheasant sausage

On tap at Frankfort Hall in Philadelphia. Hazy yellow gold color. Brief white head. Mild wheat aroma hints at sour lemon. Flavor follows nose. Sour malt. Lemon and yeast. Clean, crisp and refreshing.

many Thanks for this traditional beer to Koelschtrinker. Poured into Barenbier Berliner Weisse glass. Niemal bez piany, brudnawa metnawo-piaskowa barwa, z lekkim zapachem nadpsutych papierowek lezacych w trawie. W smaku kwasek, sok kwasny z jablek, nieco przyprawy jakiejs. Dziwne nieco.

$6.49 bottle, WM-CHO. Slightly hazy gold with a white head. Aroma is faint, but what's there is lemon zest, wheat. Flavor is tart wheat, lemon zest, bread crust.

3rd LCRBM. This will get a re-rate soon, because of a trade with Der Doppelbock, but first impressions are these: yoghurt and, surprisingly, some hops in the aroma. Very modestly sour flavor with yoghurt, fresh cheese and traubenzucker. Citrus. Thin, but complex and delicious. Re-rate: First rating was fairly accurate. Lychee in the somewhat citric aroma. A slight lemony sourness with tropical fruit added. pineapple, lychee, traubenzucker. Good complexity is this delicious and characterful beer, that is way less sour as the Berliner Weisse from Schultheiss or Kindl.
