Dark Belgian wheat ale.

Import series volume 3. Dark Belgian Wheat Ale. Brewed with good friend, Urbain Coutteau of De Struise Brouwers. Urbain describes this work as "Dark chess-nut coloured ale with a nice steady off-white head. Aroma is all about finesse, loads of blossoms and spring flowers. The mouth-feel is refined, playful and complex with Saison like peppery flavours. Soft nutty after taste with a bite."

Dark brown but chocolatey when held up to the light. Big beige frothy head. Sightly cloudy. Aroma is lemony and wheaty. Bit of coriander maybe. Taste gives a bit of orange and and slightly spicy wheat beer taste. Slightly bitter to start then moves on to slightly creamy smoothness.

A deep dark brown ale with a thin brown head. In aroma, sweet fruity chocolate malt with loads of pine needles, juniper, molasses, mocha, alcohol warmth, very nice. In mouth, a sweet fruity chocolate malt with loads of licorice, juniper, light coffee, grassy hops, oily mouth feel, alcohol warmth, very nice.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Wilbur’s Fort Collins. Pours a bit cloudy dark orangish brown appearance with a light brown head. Gooey caramel, orange candy, floral aroma. Some spicy / phenolic notes as well. A bit oxidized. Goopy brown sugar / toffee, tangerine fruity, kind of boozy flavor. Spicy and sweet. Too strong for my liking. Not sure if I’ll be purchasing many more of these high priced Stillwater releases.

Lovely orange-brown with lace. Wheaty, saison yeast, spicy, some caramel, grass. A touch of cola. Nicely spicy yeast, caramel, dark malts, nice malts. Clean and dry. Very nice amber saison. Floral, but don’t especially get rose or jasmine. OK, maybe a bit of jasmine.

Bottle shared at Pre-Zwanze tasting. It pours hazy dark brown with a small beige head. The nose is wood, mellow roast, toast, brown sugar, mild oxidized notes, dried fruit and coconut. The taste is cola, raisin, date, prune, spice, toast, brown bread, caramel and light alcohol. Medium-full body and fine carbonation. Well-rounded and balanced. Nice stuff.

Bottle at the Pre-Zwanze Tasting - Bruce’s in London. Thanks to Paul. Pours lightly hazy brown with a creamy head. Rich bready malt nose, some brown sugar and caramel, hints of age. Big sweet flavor with sugary bread, caramel, hints of chocolate, doughy bread. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish, some aged dark malts, caramel, light alcohol, dates. Very nice. Has aged well. Interestingly, I get some quite different characteristics compared to when I tried this on draft a few months ago. (3.7)

Tap at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2013 - Day 2, Session 1. Pours clear, deep orange with a strong, creamy crown. Sugary wheat in the nose, candi sugar, lightly toasted dough. Big sweet flavor with sugary dough, further candi sugar, light alcohol, hints of herbs. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Lightly warming finish with sticky sugars. The sweetness is somewhat cloying at times. (3.5)
