Brewed on: October 10, 2011. Packaged on October 25, 2011. Our first ever collaborative beer has all the familiar flavors of the season, but done with Epic style. To a base of strong, roasty, and chocolaty porter, we add 200 pounds of real pumpkin per batch, five spice and whole Madagascar vanilla beans. As you pour this deeply ruby brown beer, you’re greeted by the aroma of fresh cut squash, followed by rich chocolate. The flavor starts sweet with marshmallow, vanilla, and some pumpkin pie, then yields to a coffee roast and dark chocolate dryness. This beer is a great introduction for curious drinkers and a special holiday treat for fans of the style.

Keg at the Denver taproom. Pours clear red-brown with a dense, creamy tan head. The nose has some burnt pumpkin pie, hints of roast, dried berries. Medium sweet flavour with mellow cocoa, some meaty pumpkin, lightly tangy dark berries, molasses. Medium to full bodiednwith fine, massaging carbonation. Sweet finish with low warmth, some burnt toast, more dried berries, toasted vanilla pods, earth. Nice beer.

Tap at Hair of the Dog, Phromh Phong. Poured a murky light brown with a thin broken white head. The aroma is pumpkin, chocolate, yeast. The flavour is light grainy sour witn a dry earthy coffee malt mineral light fruit palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Great on the nose then it all fell apart.

At the brewery during GABF week, 2015. Imperial pumpkin porter. Dark brown, mild roasted malt aroma. Real pumpkin flavor rather than the frequent pumpkin pie character. Earthy, but some lightly sweet malt. nice lacing head on top. Good.

Draft. Brown body with a short, frothy brown head. Aroma of roasted grain, cocoa. Light hints of nutmeg and all spice. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Light alcoholic finish. Lots of pumpkin in this beer (according to the commercial description), but since pumpkin doesn’t taste like much at all, the beer doesn’t taste much like pumpkin — nor the spices associated with pumpkin pie. That’s not bad since so many pumpkin beers are overly spiced. This is under spiced. Hint of alcohol in the finish along with chocolate and coffee bitterness.

Pour is a near black with a small tan head. Aroma is sweet but burnt malt with a very subtle pumpkin pie spice. Flavor is some sweet chocolate malt with some vanilla and caramel sugar notes. Pumpkin spice is kind of an after thought as they are overshadowed by the rich porter malts. If you are looking for a intense pumpkin beer this is not the one to look for. This is more a spiced porter with the porter aspect leading the way.
