The St. Sebastiaan Dark is a dark, medium to heavy high fermented abbey beer that tastes both sweet and bitter on the tongue. This St. Sebastiaan has a strong, sweet aroma of caramel and malt and gives you a full taste in the mouth. It is re-fermented on the jug and on the bottle by the brewery. The result is a nice, clear beer with a wonderful aroma and, for those who love it, a nice touch of yeast at the bottom of the bottle.

0,5L bottle (from beerExpress, Tallinn). Pours dark brown with light brown head. The head stays for some time. Aroma is sweet, malt, dark fruits, plums. Flavor is sweet and bitter, burnt sugar, dark fruits, metallic notes, spicy notes. Overall: ok brew, don’t like the metallic notes.

16 ounce ceramic bottle into tulip glass, best before 10/15/2017. Pours crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big raisin, plum, fig, pear, apple, caramel, toast, dark candi sugar, bread, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast and dark/bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, fig, pear, apple, caramel, toast, dark candi sugar, bread, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light earthy yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, plum, fig, pear, apple, caramel, toast, dark candi sugar, bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of dark/bready malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly crisp, and lightly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Belgian dark ale style. All around great complexity and balance of dark/bready malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

One of Sterkens’ ’kruikenbieren’, dark brown, malty, sweet and yeasty with some complexity, but a bit thin body, like most of the Sterkens ales.

Bottle. Pours cloudy dark coffee brown with airy but stable light tan head. Clear aroma of fruit and flowers, with notes of malt. Sweet, malty flavour, with fruity and caramellish notes and mild hoppy touches. Bitter finish. Reasonable but I have tasted better beers of this style. Way too expensive, at least where I bought it.

500 ml capped stoneware bottle, with swingtop. Bought at Alcampo Gran Canaria. ABV is 6.9%. A dark strong beer, brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot. Very dark brown colour, large and lasting off-white to beige head. Moderately malty and slightly spicy aroma, hints of caramel. Malty flavour, hints of caramel, mild spices and brown bread, but not as sweet as many other Belgians.

I was lucky enough to get the lower priced 75cl glass bottle version instead of the pottery 50cl one. Dark red brown colour. Dried fruits in the aroma, raisins, etc. Flavour is generally quite sweet and caramelesque but there’s a background woody, nutty dryness to keep it in check.
