Single bottle from HyVee Ankeny. "Enjoy by 6/24/2015." And I am striving to have more of my Imperial IPA’s fresh, finding that aging isn’t always best. So this throws off a big luscious smell of green leaf hops right under the cap. Poured into an IPA tulip, its shows a darker body than most IPAs, more of an amber color, under a thick but lacy head. Hops smell is more subdued in the glass, perhaps as it’s being confronted by some strong malt (but no alcohol smell). Sipping gives me a slightly syrupy, caramel tasting malt. A strange thread of astringent patent roast malt, either my imagination or they slipped in just a little for color. Hops are rustic, with a dominating taste of pine needles and overall just a slightly prickly bitterness. Thick mouthfeel forces me to enjoy this slowly. A good strong IPA, definitely best enjoyed fresh!

Bottle. Amber beer with a cream head. Grapefruit and light caramel aroma. Caramel and grapefruit flavor with light sweet malt. Medium bodied. Decent bitterness. Grapefruit and caramel linger with light pine.

Copper color. Aroma of mild hops. Flavor is bitter with citrus and pine, but balanced by a sweet malt body. Finish is bitter hops and sweet malt.

Can. An unclear, golden colored beer with a small, off-white head. The aroma is sweetish, with apricot notes and resins. The flavor has a light sweetness, a bitterness level to deal with it, some maltyness and resiny, piney hop flavors. Full body and a pleasant carbonation level. Lasting fruity and bitter finish. Sure a decent one, not too bitter and not too sweet. Wouldn’t mind repeating this one. 140613

This is a little understated, was expecting a much bigger kick from both the hops and the ABV. That said, this is part of this beer’s charm, very smooth and drinkable for a DIPA. Lots of hop resin, almost sticky, clingy head with lots of lacing, more hop resin on the finish.

Pours deep clear deep gold into a tulip. Bright white head with medium retention recedes leaving spider lacing. Sweet caramel and resin aromas. Hot resin and pineapple front to back and into the slightly stale finish.

Bottle split at GBBF ’14, day 1, 12/08/14 thanks to JF. Lightly hazed golden amber with moderate off white edgeing and spotting. Nose is caramel malt, light spice, bitter citric peel, earthy hop. Taste comprises light pine, orange pith, grapefruit, touch of mango, straw. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with hop bitterness. Drinkable stuff but lower end of the style spectrum for me.

GBBF Day 1. Bottle share. Lightly hazy gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light and smooth with mild fine carbonation. Sweetish creamy malts, little caramel. Sweetish marmalade and dried fruit hops. Pine. Nice touch of lime marmalade as well! Floral tones. Modest tropical fruits and even a touch of apricot. Light finish. Nice.

Bottle from GBBF 2014 and drunk at home. Clear amber lasting cream head. Hop resiny aroma. Some toffee biscuit sweetness in the mouth. Very smooth in the mouth. Quite hoppy but not over the top. No real burn on the finish. The ABV is hidden well. If I made a DIPA this is how I would want it to turn out, balanced and hoppy but not super hoppy, good biscuit and sweetness in the mouth and good bitterness on the finish. Good
