500ml bottle from Tebay Services, pours deep black with a white head. Aromas & tastes of coffee, red fruits, earth, hints of spice & roasted malt. Medium body. Smooth finish. Enjoyable

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Deep ruby-brown with a lasting cream head. Chocolate, a little smoke. A hint of blackberry. It's pleasant enough, albeit rather light and forgettable.

[Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell.] A peaty brown pour with a thin beige head; lactic aroma; smooth and creamy in the mouth with a burnt toast taste; and a bready finish. Pleasant but unexciting.

Tight foamed tan head left a cover on a still black body. Liquorice, nutty & chocolate aroma. Medium bodied, smooth on the tongue with a light tingle on the back. Liquorice, malt, burnt, nutty & chocolate tastes with a bitter finish. Nice one.

Bottle at home (18 months out of date !) Has a vague aroma of coffee, cream and some roast malts. Pours a dark reddish brown with a generous (but transient) frothy cream head. Initial taste is fruity, then some coffee and liquorice all with a smooth velvet texture. Finish is fruity too, damsons and blackberries. I like this.
