Otto, pictured in the silhouette on the front of the label, is certainly a fat pug. But, being the runt of the litter, Otto is also a stout pug…measuring in at a cool 1’1”. Brewed in Otto’s honor, Fat Pug Milk Stout is a full flavored (fat) stout that remains extremely drinkable. Otto the fat pug can be seen from time-to-time checking in on things at Mercenary, making sure his namesake beer is brewed right.

I appreciate the restraint on the lactose--too often milk stout equates to Tootsie Roll--but never really develops a soul of its own. The roasted notes are very subdued, the texture's pretty light and sparkly for a stout, and the finish lacks much of a presence at all.

0.473l can from Beer Republic. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel, cocoa, dried fruit and grass. Pours almost black color with thin creamy light brown head and average sparkling appearance. Taste starts with medium sweet and rich roasted malt and milk chocolate, following is caramelly, earthy and grassy, mouthfeel is smooth, while finish is pretty bitter. Medium body, creamy texture and average carbonation in palate. Creamy dog…

Nitro. Black with a huge creamy tan head that lingered. Woody and a bit roasty with a note of cream. Long finish. Medium body.

Optisch wunderbar, schöner feiner Cremeschaum. Im der Nase leicht malzig. Im Trunk röstig, cremig, Espresso, bittersweet, nicht sonderlich schwer, röstiger Abgang, passt.

On nitro tap at Maplewood, pours black with a large creamy tan head. Aroma is soft; with gentle lactose, cocoa, and a hint of oats. Flavour is much the same, with cocoa, lactose and oats. A bit haphazard in cohesion but nothing too harsh. It's alright.

16 oz. can from Beerhead, dated 5/31/22. Light chocolatey smell. Opaque brown to black body, under a tan head. Fine roasty malts on the palate. Roast is tempered by the lactose. Not hard to enjoy. A bit of a coffee aftertaste. Clearly the base for Maplewood's many variations: barrel-aged, imperial, and pastry versions.
