For the first time, the brewers at Sam Adams have completely reformulated a popular flagship beer: Rebel IPA. After more than four years, the brewers undertook what they called “Project Lupulus,” an experiment that takes advantage of hops that were not readily available or have been newly cultivated since Rebel IPA first launched in 2014. As part of this project, the brewers collaborated, starting in 2013, with a hop breeder in Yakima Valley, WA to create a new hop variety proprietary and exclusive to Sam Adams called HBC 566. After months of experimenting with dozens of trial batches at the Boston Brewery, the brewers are now ready to release the new Rebel IPA recipe which is brewed with HBC 566 and another new experimental hop variety for bittering, HBC 682. Rebel IPA now has a more intense juicy, tropical and citrus flavor supported by a leaner body and a crisp, clean finish to optimize the hop character. So what changes? Paying homage to the original recipe, Rebel IPA is brewed with a few of the original hop varieties including Cascade, Centennial, Simcoe® and Chinook. For the 2017 release, the brewers added Mosaic hops, alongside HBC 566, a new hop proprietary to Sam Adams, and HBC 682, a new, experimental bittering hop.

(bottle, 35.5cl) Almost clear, deep golden colour with a mid-sized and slightly off-white foamy head. Slightly bready malty and mildly fruity hoppy aroma, including hints of citrus, pineapple and grapefruit. Slightly bitter flavour, medium bodied with a crisp carbonation. Slightly bready malty base with shades of caramel from far behind, accompanied by moderately fruity and restrained piney hops; mildly bitter finish with a moderately fruity tail. Okay. 30.I.18

12oz bottle from Wegmans, West Seneca. A slightly hazy amber pour with a thin white head; pleasantly floral and citrus aroma; lively malty body with some tropical and orchard fruit and a herbal bitterness; before an fruity malt finish. A nicely balanced, fruity IPA, this went really well with my steak dinner.

Bottle from a discount supermarket in Copenhagen. Clear golden with small white head. Sweet pils malts, grapefruit candy, light peach, lychee, a touch of marijuana, grassy, orange peel. Medium sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with crisp feel. Like a hopped up lager. Quite drinkeable, would be a nice beer to have at a concert venue or something.

So almost every sammy you see around today has the name rebel in it. I already did this and now its a new beer? Whatever. If its the new rebel, then label it, new rebel. But I see since coke tried the new thing it didn't work either. So, just change the formula and hope you don't insult any of the other likers of the old brew? Well, so much for the BS, this is a bottle that pours thickly and foamy pale. Nice big giant head continues to form, almost over top the glass. Forms a plateau. It looks beautiful and then you taste it with nose punching thru the head. Taste is big mouthcoating fresh ass bitter biting sticky viscous hop resin. Knows how to plow across the tongue and sides of yer mouth. SO strong, so bitter, so relentless. Whew, terribly on double IPA style. Nasty nellie.
