For the first time, the brewers at Sam Adams have completely reformulated a popular flagship beer: Rebel IPA. After more than four years, the brewers undertook what they called “Project Lupulus,” an experiment that takes advantage of hops that were not readily available or have been newly cultivated since Rebel IPA first launched in 2014. As part of this project, the brewers collaborated, starting in 2013, with a hop breeder in Yakima Valley, WA to create a new hop variety proprietary and exclusive to Sam Adams called HBC 566. After months of experimenting with dozens of trial batches at the Boston Brewery, the brewers are now ready to release the new Rebel IPA recipe which is brewed with HBC 566 and another new experimental hop variety for bittering, HBC 682. Rebel IPA now has a more intense juicy, tropical and citrus flavor supported by a leaner body and a crisp, clean finish to optimize the hop character. So what changes? Paying homage to the original recipe, Rebel IPA is brewed with a few of the original hop varieties including Cascade, Centennial, Simcoe® and Chinook. For the 2017 release, the brewers added Mosaic hops, alongside HBC 566, a new hop proprietary to Sam Adams, and HBC 682, a new, experimental bittering hop.

Bottle. Creamy white good mostly lasting head. Yellow colour. Moderate malty and hoppy aroma. Moderate bitter flavor. Average moderate bitter finish. Oily palate.

Aroma - citrus zest, more sweet malts as it warms up
Taste of citrus zest, bitter zest hops, soft sweet pale malt background
Palate - Soft carb, medium body, bitter zest, sweet pale malt, palate a bit muddled. Finish as main flavour, bit too bitter.
Overall - Just OK, not that exciting

bottle from menu. clear yellow small white head. mild flowery and piny, grapefruity bitter hops, but not agressively hopped. flavor is bitter hoppy, bitter malty, plenty of bitterness, but is is somewhat soulless, and boring.

Bottled. A golden beer with a beige head. The aroma has notes of hops, spices, fruits, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, spices, hops, and citrus fruits, leading to a bitter finish.

Not really sure how much this is different from prev years. Clear golden appearance, large fluffy head. Nose is fresh hop, very citrus, a tiny hint of old pineapple , vaguely floral. Initial mouthfeel has the stingy resiny hop presence, with a linger piney grapefruit rind finish. Malt doesn’t have much to say, it’s a tad thick and bready, rounded mouthfeel. Lingering aftertaste is plenty hoppy bitter, seems like a classic chinook finish.

Bottle picked up at SuperBrugsen, Christianshavns Torv for the rather fair price of 15DKK - golden coloured pour with white head. Fruity and malty with some some citrus lemon and orange notes, splash of grapefruit, sweet caramel malty base, pine needles, solid hoppy bitter into the close. Picked this up thinking it was the old version with new design, pretty impressive surprise for a supermarket beer.

It’s pretty fresh and there’s a "17" on the bottom of the bottle. Guess it’s already the 2017- version. Nose is grassy and slightly resinous with notes of grapefruit and lemon. Taste follows the aroma with a crackery malts base and also some flowery hops notes. Medium sweetness and medium to high bitterness in an overall nicely balanced profile. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Overall it’s nothig remarkable or impressing, but it’s definitely well made and enjoyable.

Pours a nice orange-gold, yet the head’s weak and the lacing fairly minor. Nose hits a pungent, herbaceous note, almost European, mild citrus underneath. Taste blends biscuity malt with orange-lemon hops and a floral, piney bitterness. Grainier than expected, yet also a bit too weak in the middle, lacking but sufficient sweetness or much lupulin character. Finishes mild, light pine but in need of more IBUs. Should be much more aggressive with this hop blend. Rather just an average IPA.
