Our location, on the northern California coast, is in close proximity to the migratory path of gray whales and the southern habitat of orcas. The plight of Steller sea lions and their declining populations is an issue that resonates with us. This is also the birthplace of whale activism.

In the spirit of the Mendocino Whale Wars of the late 1960s and early 70s, North Coast Brewing is pledging a portion of the proceeds of every bottle and keg of North Coast Steller IPA to marine mammal research and rescue through the North Coast Brewing Company Marine Mammal Research Fund, a project of The Ocean Foundation.

Like muscat, spruce tips, and pennyroyal, North Coast Steller IPA is redolent of resinous terpenes: myrcene, linalool, pinene, and geraniol.

I liked this one. Rich hoppy nose, tropical fruit (indistinct, maybe green mango) and citrus (oranges, tangerines). Unique in a way. Hint at sweat sock. Bready, almost caramel malts. Malt is pretty pronounced but I like it that way sometimes.

Marine mammals! My favourite cause! Actually I just buy beers I've never heard of before, so this one ended up in me basket. Nice head, reasonably foamy, good golden body, minimal carbs dude. Soft hops leaning towards rotten cabbage and dirty cardboard that the homeless guy slept on. Flavour is a soft hops mix with wet rag and diesel fuel that doesn't quite work. Odd how they could manage this sort of flammable fuel flavour here instead of just badly brewing an IPA. But rather this one's kind of offensive, but brings back old memories of trying to get high on gas fumes. Either way I can't recommend it. That stuff rots your brain. Not sure what the effect is on marine mammals though, someone should fund them for a study....

Bottle. Pours mostly clear golden-orange with fluffy white head that fades to a ring. Aroma is grassy, orange and slight pith. Taste leans more to the orange fruit. Finishes semi-dry.

Tap at SF Beer Week Opening Gala. Pours clear golden, big stable foam. Aroma: Hops are grassy, a little tropical and citric. Medium body, good bitterness over a solid malt body, balanced. Rather light altogether. Good
