Saison du Japon is brewed with a local wheat and koji (malted rice) which is a vital ingredient to create Sake. This beer has a uniquely sweet flavor of rice koji and a natural acidity caused by the fermentation.

Ingredients: Water, barley malt (Lager, Munich), wheat malt, rice koji, Yuzu juice, hops (Perle, Kent Golding, Pacifica, Hallertau), Ale yeast.

Cloudy yellow pour, big white head. Very sweet Aroma, hints of cooked rice, wet paper, and lemon rind. Slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carb. Finish is sweet, lacks a sharp saison bite, and crispness. Reminds me more of a wit than a saison. Meh.

Dry. Pale malt, unusual grain profile, spicy and foral notes. Interesting.

350mL can with JP11.23m on the bottom, drunk 10/18/24. Clear bronze with a hint of copper/amber. Medium-sized, white head slowly recedes to cover. Bitter, grassy and/or herbal qualities in the nose with big pepper notes and an underlying dough and honey-like malt. Not what I was expecting (honestly was expecting Americanized saison here) and I'm pleasantly surprised at the lack of crude esters/phenols. Malty flavors with light caramel and/or koji. Sweetness tempered somewhat by whatever this bitter element is. Not a classic Belgian saison, nor is it a crappy Americanized version. Not sure what the hell this is, but it's different and interesting. Maybe a touch sweeter than I'd prefer. Lingering orange water, floral notes, grass and sweet koji. Not really rating this as a true Belgian saison. More of a flavored/spiced ale.

Sample courtesy of Grumbo, cheers Graham! Clear bright golden colour, bubbly white foam head and aroma of flowers, fruits, apricot hint, citrus, grains. Taste is malty, grain, bread, yeasty, fruit, with yuzu citrus and herbal hop bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, light bitter finish. Quite drinkable.
