Cask at Alexandra, Derby – as Silver Brewhouse Coal Face Stout. Pours almost black with minimal off-white head. Roast malts in the aroma, and they carry through into the mouth where they are joined by liquorice and alcoholic strength. Finish is quite fruity. Not bad.

Handpull cask at the Queens Road Tap, Leicester. Dark brown and translucent with a thin and slightly ethereal beige/khaki head. Chocolate malt and a good bit of black liquorice in the aroma. Taste is sweet with liquorice the dominant taste. Some well-rounded hop bitterness in the finish with foraged berry and plum character. A touch mire liquorice in the aftertaste. Body on the light side, almost no carbonation. Not bad.
