Pint of the Usual? And why not, indeed. This is a shy beer, bashful even, hiding behind a column in a hallway, slow to trumpet its subtleties but on emerging it creeps up on the unwary. There?s a pear drop meets orange marmalade note on the nose, a well-rounded fruitiness, with wisps of caramel also dropping by. The caramel and the orange marmalade combine on the palate, offering a restrained sweetness that is counter-pointed by a dry, bitter, grainy finish that also brings forth some raspberry notes. The phrase ?I?ll have another one of these? springs to mind.

Cask-conditioned at the brewery tap, the Griffin, Frome 6/12/08. Copper coloured with a moderate off-white head that left plenty of lacing. Sweet, malty aroma with some earthiness in the background. Flavour began with a touch of caramel before a hint of citrus hops and decent bitter finish [3.1]. Good. Re-rate at the Cross Hands, Winterbourne Down, S Gloucestershire November 2009. This was greatly improved, with juicy new world hops throughout, balanced with some decent malt sweetness and a good dry finish [3.7].
