Near black with a frothy, off-white head, has a dark fruit and malt aroma, and a similar taste, with some treacle sweetness and a slightly oily mouthfeel, and a touch of bitterness in the finish

Bottle at home (origins unknown and 4.9%) Nice aroma of vanilla in the nose. Pours mahogany with a transient cream head. A good mix of fruit and sweetness in the mouth, Blackberries, chocolate and aniseed. Finish has liquorice and roast malts. Overall it’s nice, but there is an underlying unpleasantness, which I can’t pin down.

Cask at the Agricultural Hotel, Penrith, labelled as Brodie's Prime Porter at 4.9% abv. Chestnut-brown with a thick yellow-beige head. Nutty chocolate, liquorice and a mild roastiness. It's ok.
