Draught at Kantien in Ghent, shared by Goedele. An Estonian rye saison hopped with - now - classic New World hops. Tightly membrane-lacing, egg-white, medium sized, more or less stable head over an equally cloudy, deep orangey amberish beer with ochre brownish hue. Not very strong or convinving aroma: a whiff of rotten cabbage interrupts a more attractive play of peach, cooked carrots, soggy rye bread, orange peel, tomato concentrate, wet heay, damp tree leaves, apple peel. Sweetish onset, hinting at peach and pineapple with a light olive-like touch somewhere, sourish undertone, sharp and minerally carbonation. Bready, tad nutty malt body with indeed that soft, near-spicy effect of rye bread but lightly so; spicy, orange peel-ish hoppiness in the finish, but fighting against that unpleasant rotting cabbage aspect returning retronasally. Earthy, bit 'dirty' yeastiness as well, but fortunately the freshness brought by the orange effect from the Cascade survives this. Not a bad idea in itself, combining rye and American hops in a saison concept, but in order to fully qualify as one (to me at least - but to each his own in this particular 'style'), I expect a lot more dryness, 'rural' and hayish qualities and crispness. Drinkable, but the rotting cabbage aspect became difficult to ignore in the end, as the beer warmed up... Not Öllenaut's biggest achievement so far, I'm afraid.
