A contradiction in term, black IPA’s are a clash of styles old and new. Modern tangy citrus hops merge with roasted chocolate malts for a truly classic beer. Black as night, but close your eyes and you're drinking a zesty IPA.

Bottle. Asdas. Didn’t even know this existed. Pretty much black. Loose lasting beige foam. Roast malt with some coffee notes. Bit of charred citrus. Taste is bittersweet erring on charred bitterness. Decent depth with foamy carbonation. Lingering char on the finish. Needs more hops.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Pours black with a huge thick creamy beige head. Aromas of citrusy orange, citrus pith, pine and chocolate. Taste has more of the same notes, more citrus orange and grapefruit pith, pine, chocolate with some ashy notes, roasted malts and leafy hops lingering on the bitter finish. Medium to full body, fairly low carbonation and smooth mouthfeel. I will be having this again. Very decent black IPA.

Bottle. Dark brown/black with a massive beige head. Aroma of grapefruits and pine. Taste of roasted malts, dark chocolate, hints of coffee, grapefruits and pine. Roasty, slightly smoky and fruity. Strong and lasting bitterness. Low to medium carbonation. Balanced and proper indeed.
