XB is a rare delight, a real ale connoisseur’s masterpiece. A strong full-bodied ale with a subtle but superb blend of two types of bitter and three fruit hop varieties giving a most thirst quenching and satisfying ale. XB was first brewed in 1982 to celebrate the purchase of the Carlisle Brewery by Theakstons a few years before. Brewed always and ever in Masham, XB was designed as a tribute to the classic ‘border’ style of beer, strong in gravity, low but complex hop. It was an instant sucess and has remained so, winning over real ale devotees all over the UK. Always in the shadow of its more famous stable–mate, Old Peculier, XB has quietly established itself as favourite among serious cask ale enthusiasts. Its name came not from some clever marketing expert but rather based on the more prosaic features of the Masham brewery. In the days when the only way to distinguish the contents from one cask to the next was by use of one of only two wooden stamps dipped in white wash and applied to each cask, the only letters available were either an X or a B. We could have called in BX but we preferred XB!
The full-bodied nature of XB makes it the perfect accompaniment to big, full, flavoured dishes such as sausages, meat or game pies, stews etc.

New Beer Distributors, NY 330ml ($2.25): Pours a brownish amber color with a nice and creamy head. Aroma is English hops, malt, and some dirt. Taste is slightly bitter. Simple, but of course. This ain’t watery like some bitters. I drank the bottle in about a minute, and I think that was the point.

500ml bottle - Nothing special about the aroma - a bit hoppy, but nothing as complex as the commercial description. pours a deep ruby, small white head. Bit of a let down with the taste, an ordinary bitter with a thin mouth feel. Poor for Theakston.

50 cl bottle @ home, BBE 30.06.2012
Aroma is sweetish with toffee, some fruits and hay – very typical to englis ales. Flavour has bready malt, toffee, hops and hay. Yet another bitter.

Bottled (from K Citymarket Kivihaka, Vaasa). Amber colour, mediumsized off-white foamy longlasting head, that leaves some lace. Aroma is caramel, toffee, some biscuits, mild fruity and floral notes as well. Flavour is toffee, caramel, mild toasted notes along with some mild fruity and floral notes. The floral notes and caramel/toffee is rather big in the finish with some mild wet burnt wooden notes as well. Actually much better than I expected. Quite rich tongueticking carbonation.

Aug 2008: Brown 500ml bottle, drank two weeks after its Best Before Date. I really must cataloge my beer stash one day. Poured into a Batemans half pint sleeve and my new La Chouffe tulip glass. Good looking deep amber colour with an off white head which fell away to a wisp and then to a thin collar around the glasses. Treacle and toffee aroma, pleasant more than sicky sweet. Good bitter sweet taste, typical good quality English Bitter. The molasses from the aroma are also in the taste and mouthfeel, they hang around a while.

Bottled 500ml (K-Kamppi, BB 06/2012)
Clear copper-amber color, small off-white head. Nutty metallic nose. Light bodied. Nutty, a bit fruity English hops, caramel and some metal. Quite similar to cask version, perhaps is even a bit better with extra CO2.

Pours copper with a small head.Nose shows floral and earthy hops with toffee, caramel and bready malt underneath.Similar toffee and caramel as flavours along with the floral hops and peach blossom. Unfortunately the finish is slightly metallic.Body feels a bit too heavy.
