A stout as black as the nearby volcanic flow from which it is named. Dive into its dark, robust depths with intense layers of espresso and chocolate. Roasted malt and barley give it a full, toasty finish.

Pours a solid black with a thin tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is a roasty chocolaty affair with some dried fruit and a touch of hop aroma for good measure. Taste follows the smell, but lingers with a bit of ash in the finish. Full body, creamy texture, ample carbonation. If not for the ash in the finish Iโ€™d love this beer. As is its still good, just not spectacular.

Pours a nice dark brown (not quite as inky black as some imperials) with thin to medium head. Very strong roasted grain flavor overpowers some of the other elements in the beer.

Draught, Toronado, San Francisco. Black as a ravens wing with a small tan head. Decent nose with dark chocolate, roasted malt and coffee notes. These themes continued on into the flavour accompanied by a hint of some dark fruit. Nice n smooth fullish body and mouthfeel. Dried out somewhat towards the finish. Well executed and tidy stout.

Pours black with a small dark head.Nose shows intense roasted coffee and dark chocolate with a hint of smoke. Very nice.Very similar flavours, lots of roasted malt and coffee beans with more noticeable smoke. Finishes with a light roasty bitterness.Carbonation is a little too high.

Bottle. Brownish black with a tan head that fades to a good coat then lingers. Aroma has charred malt, coffee, hints of dark berries and mint (?!). Smooth texture is not quite oily. Just slightly carbonated. Taste has plenty of roasted bitterness, cocoa, some coffee astringency. Caramel and berry sweetness is there but mostly buried. Dry finish has roasted and piney hop bitterness with some salt and ash. Slightly muddled finish and something slightly jarring in the aroma, but a good stout all the same.

Medium, rather dense beige head over black beer. Cucumber - fresh cucumber! Greenmalt the reason? Some hops definitely too. Very discreet burnt/roasted malt notes. Again something like fresh vegetables, if not really as convincingly cucumber. Warming up (too) much liquorice. Despite the polar serving temperature, obviously full-bodied, some alcoholwarming. Great, if not really excellent stout, with a surprising nose.

I had this as part of a sampler at Deschutes in Portland, OR. Great dry stout, creamy cocoa and chocolate, little nutty, roasty. Would definitely have this again in a larger glass, with more in it than what I had.

12 oz bottle into English pint. Canโ€™t believe I havenโ€™t rated this classic yet. Aromas of roasted malt, brown sugar, black coffee. Pours opaque black with a thick tan head which dissipates in a few minutes, leaving a nice long retaining centimeter thick head and sticky lacing. Taste is sweet at first and finishes just slightly bitter. Carbonation is medium. Fairly creamy mouthfeel. Could be bigger bodied. Overall, a very nice stout, but not as good as I remember it. I havenโ€™t had one in a few years.

12 oz. bottle, pours black with a huge tan head. Aroma is roasted malt and espresso. Exceptionally creamy mouthful, with a dark roasted malt and espresso flavour and a thick finish. Excellent stout!
