A stout as black as the nearby volcanic flow from which it is named. Dive into its dark, robust depths with intense layers of espresso and chocolate. Roasted malt and barley give it a full, toasty finish.

Cold bottle. Pour is big and black, was hoping this was not impy stout. Clean sterile malty nose. First taste is big black burned wood in liquid form. Bitter strong, and almost marches into impy territory. Bitter smacking lingering back of throat thang. So much in such a short time. Difficult in the end. Long finish. Big bastard baddazz beer. Watch out!

Deep, rich, delicious stout, full of dark, dark chocolate, roasted malts, anise, and veins of black cherry and currant. Milk chocolate floats around the periphery, but the hops cut the sweetness with an abrupt bitter finish, followed by a dry, cocoa-dusted gade. Pours brown-black with a brief tan head and modest lacing. Mocha and roasted malt on the nose. Medium-bodied for a stout, but creamy and way too easy to drink. Great beer.

On nitro at the brewery. Nice feel, but he hops come through significantly more than the roasted malts, which to me is not overly desirable. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Always pleased to get to try a Deschutes beer for the first time. That is the case here, a single 355 ml bottle picked up in North Dallas and carried home. Poured into my Buffalo Bayou tulip glass it delivers a tuxedo black liquid and a dark tan head that promptly subsides. Taking a smell, dark raisin, baker's chocolate, malt and rock candy. A sip now, dark roast coffee, licorice, malty and hoppy both, a very small touch of sweetness. Finishes with a strong, decent bitterness. I would like to have again if it ever shows up.

Pours very dark brown, with a tan creamy head. Chocolate milk aroma, chocolate taste and lots of rich roasted flavors, sweet overall, but with a low underlying bitterness. Low carbonation. Very good.
