A stout as black as the nearby volcanic flow from which it is named. Dive into its dark, robust depths with intense layers of espresso and chocolate. Roasted malt and barley give it a full, toasty finish.

On tap at the Brewpub in Portland. Black with a small tan head. Rather creamy with roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Also some hints of dark fruit and caramel. A pleasant one.

Shared 12 oz. bottle. Pours black with a tan head; moderate amounts of lacing left on the glass. Aroma and flavors of roasted malt, coffee, some chocolate notes. Light to medium-bodied. A nice bittersweet finish. I like.

12 oz bottle. Don’t even recognize these bottles anymore, and then wonder how the hell i never rated it in the first place. I gotta start going back through all the beers i had in my freshman year of beer drinking. This was definitely one of them. Nice toasty flavor here. Roasted malt heavy. One of the most interesting stouts these guys have. Ill have another.

Purchased at Albertson in Vegas. Pours a deep brown colour with light ruby highlights. The head is creamy-foamy, beige, long lasting and gives out chunky lace. Sweet dark fruit aromas with the roasted malts and coffee notes. The taste is similar to the nose with some added hops, but mild, that creates a nice light dryness. Kind of the coffee replaced with some grass notes. A pretty good stout overall.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 2/29/2016. Pours pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, raisin, plum, licorice, toast, dark bread, light smoke/char, pine, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great complexity and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, raisin, plum, licorice, toast, dark bread, light smoke/char, pine, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Good amount of herbal/pine/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toast, dark bread, light smoke/char, pine, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and moderate earthy hop flavors; with a nice roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Fair amount of dryness from roasted bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic American stout style. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.
