Pirate Life’s IIPA (Imperial India Pale Ale) brewed with Centennial, Zues, Mosaic and Simcoe comes in a 500ml can and comes on like a freight train, bursting with citrus aromas and belting you in the back palate with hop bitterness. Fortunately all that action is balanced by a strong hop base and what they call “fun juice”; that is, alcohol. The IIPA is 8.8 per cent alcohol by volume. It is a lot, but it adds an important rounding quality to the beer.

Can 500ml. Delicate hazy, amber colour. White-yellowish, medium head. Aroma is malty with toast note and a lot of hops with sweet tropical fruits notes, really nice, good balanced. Hoppy in taste with high, long bitterness with resin, citrus, tropical fruits notes and small booze at the end which burns delicate in the throat but does not disturb, generally it is aggresive, I mean very good. Beer is medium body, delicate oily, malty, smooth and light, drinkable at the same time. There is great balance between hops and malt. Really good IIPA.

Pours nice golden, quite clear and white foam. Aroma has lots of sweet tropical fruits, some hop resins and hint of citric bitterness. Thick, hop syrup dripping mango and caramelised orange. Taste is sweetish, lots of tropical fruits and caramelised citrus fruits in there as well. I guess hops have faded a bit during the long journey - but still great beer, tastes nicely hoppy and refreshing. Which is a lot to say about 8,8% IIPA. Well balanced and drinks smooth.

Keg @ The Wolf, Birmingham. Pours hazy golden amber, large off-white head. Aroma is caramel, pine, resin. Taste seems fairly heavy on crystal malt, with equal distribution of resinous pine and shades of peachy fruits. Not my kind of IPA.
